This unit introduces an industry-based learning stream into both the Bachelor of Computer Science (BCS) and Bachelor of Software Engineering (BSE) courses. For students taking this stream, this unit is a core unit (replacing other core units in the ordinary stream).
This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.
07/12/2017 - Unit disestablished at FEC 5/17 Item 7.3.
This is a core unit for students undertaking the Industry-based learning stream in both the Bachelor of Computer Science (BCompSci), and the Bachelor of Software Engineering (BSE). This Industry-based learning unit, provides students in the Industry-based learning stream of the BCompSci and the BSE with the opportunity to enhance their education on-the-job in an industry setting, utilising skills learnt in other units in their courses.
For BCompSci students, the unit is core in place of a 6 point Capstone' project unit (either FIT3036 or FIT3037, which may still be taken as an elective), two other Computer Science approved elective units and a free elective.
For BSE students, the unit is core instead of the 12 point FIT4002 (which can still be taken as an approved elective) and another approved elective.
It is similar to FIT3045 Industry-based Learning (IBL), which is available to Bachelor of Business Information Systems (BBIS) IBL students, however, there are differences in the objectives and assessment for the two units. This reflects the different objectives of the BCompSci/BSE compared to the BBIS.
The BCompSci and the BSE aim to provide students with the theoretical foundations, technical knowledge and computing skills to allow them to develop computing solutions to real-world problems. This unit provides students with exposure to an industry IT environment, where they both apply and extend their knowledge and skills. It will also allow them to develop their professional skills, such as oral, interpersonal and written communication, and working in a team. Students completing this unit will be well prepared for working as a graduate in the commercial IT world.
At the completion of this unit students will have -
A knowledge and understanding of:
Developed the ability to:
Developed attitudes that enable them to:
Developed the skills to:
Demonstrated the communication and teamwork skills necessary to:

Students on placement work full time in a defined, graduate level role during a 22 week placement period at industry partners of the Bachelor of Computer Science and Bachelor of Software Engineering industry-based learning program. The students on placement are able to apply the knowledge and skills developed in their academic units, improve their communication, time management and customer service skills in an industry environment, experience an IT development environment and obtain feedback from experienced supervisors on their performance.
