FIT3123 Information access - disestablished (07 Dec 2017, 11:10am) [ INFO ACCESS (18 Jun 2008, 1:58pm)]

Reasons for Introduction

Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

This revised unit is a core unit in the Bachelor of Information Systems (Information Management). It is part of the librarianship stream of units required for ALIA recognition. The unit is consistent with the demands from the LIS profession and the workplace for students to be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills relating to reference processes, and an understanding of the principles and practice applied by libraries in selecting, acquiring/licensing, and providing users with access to all forms of information resources. This unit is taught in conjunction with IMS5016, but has a different assessment structure. It replaces LAR3650 and LAR3652.

Reasons for Introduction (18 Jun 2008, 2:01pm)

This is a 3rd year elective unit in the BITS.

The unit is consistent with the demands from the LIS profession and the workplace for students to be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills relating to reference processes, and an understanding of the principles and practice applied by libraries in selecting, acquiring/licensing, and providing users with access to all forms of information resources.

Reasons for Change (07 Dec 2017, 11:10am)

This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

This unit will no longer be offered in OCL mode from Semester 1 2012. The mode of offering from Semester 1 2012 will be on campus only. Only a handful of students have opted to take this unit in off campus mode in recent years and their results have not been very good. They are enrolled in degrees which are offered almost entirely in on campus mode and are unused to studying in off campus mode. It is very resource intensive to offer this unit in this mode to such a small number of students. It is not clear why this unit was ever offered as an OCL unit - perhaps because the equivalent 5th year unit is offered in OCL mode (FIT5105), but it is part of a postgraduate program which offers many units in this mode and attracts significant numbers of mature age students who mostly handle the mode very well. We are currently moving to remove the OCL option from all third year units in similar circumstances.

25/02/2013 - The change to the exam duration from 3 hours to 2 hours is an administrative correction, to bring this entry into line with the unit guide. The change in exam duration occurred in 2012, and the Semester 1, 2013 exam should also be 2 hours.

26/02/2013 - Exec Services administrative change to fix typo and add date.

14/05/14 - Admin update: minor change to learning outcomes (as approved by ADE).

07/12/2017 - Unit disestablished at FEC 5/17 Item 7.3.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (29 Oct 2009, 6:16pm)

This is a third year elective unit in the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (BITS). It is on the elective schedule for students interested in obtaining accreditation from ALIA or RMAA or ASA. It focuses on information provision and collection management in any real or virtual repository of knowledge. It is co-taught with FIT5105 Information Access and connects with other core Library units. The unit explores the epistemologies of knowledge, the network infrastructures that underlie its creation, dissemination and use, and the nature of patterns of organisational and individual use of knowledge. It provides up-to-date practice in the principles of information retrieval, and technologies for collection and management of information.

Objectives

Objectives (14 May 2014, 2:22pm)

At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

implement decisions about applying organisational policies for reference and collection services, justify the principles of collection management strategies, and evaluate them;

manage networked access for users in the case of electronic resources;

develop information literacy programs; and

select the best source of knowledge for a practical information need.

Synopsis (29 Oct 2009, 6:16pm)

This unit introduces students to the major categories of information resources in all media and how they are accessed through a variety of common user interfaces from anywhere in the world. The process of satisfying these needs through the reference interview and the application of skilled search strategies is explored. The ways that information resources are procured by libraries and e-repositories through purchase or licensing, and supplied to users on a cost-effective, efficient basis are examined. Access and authentication, intellectual property law and professional duty of care are described.
