Reasons for Introduction

Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

This is an elective unit within the Electronic Recordkeeping and Archiving specialisation in the Bachelor of Information Systems. Together with other units in the specialisation it is recognised as a professional qualification by the Australian Society of Archivists (ASA) and Records and Information Management Professionals Australasia (RIM Professionals Australasia). It will provide students with the skills and knowledge to:

Specify recordkeeping requirements relating to the creation, management, and accessibility of records as evidence of social and organisational activity in a range of business contexts and Develop metadata management programs in relation to contemporary and historical recordkeeping systems, including electronic recordkeeping systems and archival descriptive systems.

Reasons for Introduction (18 May 2011, 08:53am)

This is an elective unit in the BITS. It is on the elective schedule for students interested in obtaining accreditation from RIM Professionals Australasia or ASA. It provides students with the skills and knowledge to: Specify recordkeeping requirements relating to the creation, management, and accessibility of records as evidence of social and organisational activity in a range of business contexts; and Develop metadata management programs in relation to contemporary and historical recordkeeping systems, including electronic recordkeeping systems and archival descriptive systems.

Reasons for Change (07 Dec 2017, 11:09am)

This unit has been updated to change the mode of on campus delivery from a three hour seminar to a 2 hour lecture and 2 hour tutorial/lab - i.e. a 2 hour laboratory to be timetabled into a studio/lab room; and to remove the off campus learning offering. Change to be implemented from Semester 1 2012. The mode of offering from Semester 2 2012 will be on campus only. Only a handful of students have opted to take this unit in off campus mode in recent years and their results have not been very good. They are enrolled in degrees which are offered almost entirely in on campus mode and are unused to studying in off campus mode. It is very resource intensive to offer this unit in this mode to such a small number of students. It is not clear why this unit was ever offered as an OCL unit - perhaps because the equivalent 5th year unit is offered in OCL mode (FIT5087), but it is part of a postgraduate program which offers many units in this mode and attracts significant numbers of mature age students who mostly handle the mode very well. We are currently moving to remove the OCL option from all third year units in similar circumstances.

26 October 2012 - Prerequisites amended as FIT2054 ceased in 2010

22 January 2013 - Assessment changed from 45% exam and 55% in-semester to 50% in-semester and 50% exam. This aligns the assessment weightings to that of the postgraduate unit that it is co-taught with, and is inline with the companion second semester unit FIT3072 Managing Business Records. For these units the 50/50 split rather then the 60/40 split is reflective of learning outcomes, enabling sufficient weighting to the application of concepts in authentic assessment scenarios.

7 March 2013 - ASCED code changed to 091301 Librarianship and Information Management

27 May 2013 - Amendment of learning objectives to reflect the different level of cognitive domains for the third year unit versus FIT5087 Archival Systems. To apply from Semester 1 2014.

07/12/2017 - Unit disestablished at FEC 5/17 Item 7.3.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (18 May 2011, 09:00am)

This is a third year elective unit and is on the elective schedule for students interested in obtaining accreditation from RIM Professionals Australasia or ASA. Together with other units relating to electronic recordkeeping and archiving, it will be put forward for accreditation by the Australian Society of Archivists (ASA) and Records and Information Management Professionals Australasia (RIM Professionals Australasia). This unit replaces IMS3610 Evidence and Metadata and is co-taught with FIT5087 Archival Systems.
