Unit Code, Name, Abbreviation

FIT3098 Social informatics (29 Oct 2009, 6:15pm) [ SOCIAL INFORMATICS (18 Jun 2008, 12:21pm)]

Reasons for Introduction

Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

The unit is in line with the School's objectives and is consistent with the demands of the information industry for graduates able to demonstrate understanding of information communities (also called virtual communities)and how these operate as markets for information content including multimedia content. The unit fulfils a need for exploration of theory and practical examples to critical success factors in the development of information products and services. The insights gained are translated into practical competencies required for information enterprise i.e. recognising information needs and opportunities, and organising responses to these which are appropriate, creative, and financially viable.

Reasons for Introduction (29 Oct 2009, 6:15pm)

This unit is a 3rd year core unit in the BITS-Information management major, and is required for those students seeking professional recognition by ALIA and RMAA and ASA. It is also a 3rd year elective unit in the BITS.

Reasons for Change (18 Sep 2020, 3:22pm)

9 August 2019: Admin - fixed formatting.

7 August 2019: following discussion with Matt Butler concerning combined lecture/tutorial rooms to be available in the new FIT building, have decided to change the classroom contact hours back to the earlier form of 3 hours per week of "studio" (combined lecture and tutorial).

12 July 2019: Admin - updated wording of workload requirements to meet publishing requirements.

10 July 2019: change to two hours lectures and two hours tutorials, to allow for introduction of flipped classroom format. Effective semester 1, 2020.

6 June 2017: Updating exam hours from 3 to 2 hours as required by new University Examination procedures, effective S1 2018

14 February 2013: Administrative edit to fix bullet points in learning objectives.

14 February 2013: Unit learning outcomes and synopsis have been changed, in order to further differentiate it from FIT5090, particularly in terms of the cognitive level at which material is addressed.

Amended pre-reqs from 36 points of 1st year study to 6 units prior study at any undergraduate level. Change to take effect ASAP, for students enrolling for S1 2011.

Increased tute/lab hours from 1 to 2 per week, in order to provide more time for students to engage in tute/lab activities

7 November 2012: Removed reference to OCL - as reflected in the handbook, the OCL mode was dropped for this unit in 2012, but that is not reflected in the current Monatar entry.

7 November 2012: Replace existing separate lecture and tute/labs with 3 hour seminar that melds lecture components, student presentations and group activities, as a means to further student engagement and participation.

At present, and unlike their postgrad counterparts, few undergraduate students are attending lectures (which until 2012 have been held in the same theatre with FIT5090 students), or listening to the recordings of lectures; on the other hand, tute/lab participation is high.

Earlier in the year, following student feedback, it was proposed that the tute/lab component be increased from 1 to 2 hours.

Upon reflection, and following discussion with a number of colleagues teaching undergraduate students, it is now proposed that the contact hours of the unit be modified from a model of 2 hour lecture + 1 hour tute/lab (which has been the practice to date) to one of a 3 hour seminar that weaves together elements of lectures, presentations and activities aimed at maximising student engagement and exposure to unit themes and materials.

The lecturer will spend a minimum of 1 hour in each seminar, presenting the lecture-related component of the sessions.

I request that this change be adopted in time to be implemented for semester 1, 2013.

18/09/2020 Admin: Update to include new assessment and teaching approach fields as per Handbook requirements.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (29 Oct 2009, 6:15pm)

This unit is the third year elective unit in the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (BITS), and is a third year core unit in the BITS Information management major, and is required for those students seeking professional recognition by ALIA and RMAA and ASA. With its emphasis upon the development of information products and services, this unit complements other units required by students seeking professional recognition by ALIA, RMAA and ASA. This unit is co-taught with FIT5090.

This unit seeks to equip students with the knowledge and skills to participate effectively in the development of information products and services, whether as employees, team members, contractors, or self-employed practitioners.

Synopsis (14 Feb 2013, 10:24am)

This unit introduces students to a critical understanding of the impact of information and communications technology (ICT) within contemporary social relations. In particular, the unit explores the ways in which the diffusion of ICT has reshaped thinking and practice within the workplace, communities, and society more broadly. Particular emphasis is placed upon the relationship between human activity and technology, the various ways in which the latter might replace or augment the former, and the consequences that might follow from such changes.
