FIT3084 Multimedia programming and the world wide web - disestablished (07 Dec 2017, 11:01am) [ MM PROG (29 Oct 2009, 6:15pm)]

Reasons for Introduction

Reasons for Introduction (31 Oct 2005, 12:40pm)

FIT3084 is core in the BSE and an elective in the BCS, BSE, BCS/BA, BCS/LLB, BSc/BCS, and the BSc. It was introduced as part of the 2006 Faculty restructure and will be part of the revised degree roll out of level 3 units for 2008. Previously these degrees had a corresponding unit CSE2325/3325 of the same name; FIT3084 is based on CSE2325/3325. The unit was introduced to teach students: to design user interfaces for multimedia and the WWW; to write software which drives dynamic web pages.

Reasons for Change (07 Dec 2017, 11:01am)

This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

30/11/2017 - Unit disestablished at FEC 5/17 Item 7.3.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (29 Oct 2009, 6:15pm)

The unit introduces online systems and the Internet as a specific example of an online system. Students are exposed to the various multimedia services which are possible in this client/server paradigm. They will get first-hand experience with the creation of WWW content, and the tools which are available to help in this endeavour. The unit covers graphical user interface concepts, Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), principles of good design, usability testing, web programming in a language such as Javascript, Perl, and the future outlook for on-line services. Students are also exposed to the interaction of HTML and online databases, and other forms of interactive multimedia interfaces.

The unit covers software engineering knowledge areas such as software design strategies and software construction. It covers linguistic and visual software construction methods in the web domain.

This unit is based on CSE2325/CSE3325 Multimedia programming and the WWW. Other FIT units include some of the topics addressed in this unit, however, no single unit has the same combination of topics incorporating both practical and technical web programming skills, GUI concepts, design principles and usability testing, and broader multimedia interfaces. This combination of topics is tailored to suit the requirements of software engineering students.
