The efficient management of multimedia data is an increasingly relevant and important area of expertise in IT. This unit is being introduced in order to allow for students to extend their existing knowledge of data management to include the more complex considerations of dealing with image, audio and video data management.

2005: Existing units CSE3201 Information Retrieval Systems and CSE3510 Document and Imaging Systems are being merged and updated to fit into the new BITS degree structure with new FIT unit code.

FIT3076 Multimedia Database Systems is an elective 3rd level unit in the Caulfied BITS major in Systems Development.

This unit has a less research oriented focus than the postgraduate unit CSE5250 Multimedia Retrieval Technologies.

Students undertaking a Systems Development major may need skills in the efficient management of multmedia data.

At the completion of this unit, student should have understanding of:

• the issues related in managing non-structured/multimedia data. The issues includes storing and retrieving text, images, sound and video.
• semantic nature of multimedia data.
• differences that exist between a number of multimedia data representations in computer systems.
• different models of information retrieval that can be applied to manage different multimedia data type, such as text, image, sound and video.
• the adaptation of the relational database model and the SQL in dealing with multimedia data.
• the issues involved in delivery of multimedia data across LANs and WANs.

The unit will introduce students to the principles of multimedia data management. The types of data include text, image, sound and video. The unit will also look at how the relational database model and SQL can be adapted to deal with multimedia data.

The unit covers the information management issues related to handling multimedia data. The types of data includes text, image, sound and video. The differences between representation of different forms of multimedia data in computer systems and the different models of storing and retrieving the data are discussed. The unit also will look at how the relational database model and SQL can be adapted to deal with multimedia data.

The unit will have two teaching components:

• Lecture. The lecture wil be conducted for 13 weeks. Each week consists of 2 hours session. The lecture will cover the theoretical component of the unit.
• Laboratory The laboratory will be conducted for 13 weeks. Each week consists of 2 hours session. The lab will cover the revision of the lecture materials and practical component of the unit. The practical component of the unit will allow the students to understand the theoretical material covered in the lecture and to apply this knowledge to provide solution to a given real life problem. The students will use the skills acquired during the lab to complete their assignments.
