This unit will introduce students to the concepts and technologies used in supporting heterogeneous applications that employ database, such as are now being more widely used.
This is a new unit being created for the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems with a major in Systems Development.
FIT3074 Web Database Approaches is an elective 3rd level unit in the Caulfied BITS major in Systems Development.
This unit is an extension of FIT2030 Web-based Development. The unit introduces the use of XML technology in database. The understanding of the XML technology will also be complementary to the unit FIT3060 Web Service Technologies.
This unit builds knowledge of database applications, which students undertaking a Systems Development major may need in industry.
At the completion of this unit students will have knowledge and understanding of

This unit builds knowledge of database applications, in particular the relation between relational databases and XML technologies in supporting distributed applications. The XML technolohies covered include XML Schema, XPath, XQuery, XSL and SAX/DOM.

On campus
Teaching will be conducted through lectures and labs which include discussion groups and the use of commercial technologies.
Lectures will support the objectives 1-6. Laboratory/Tutorial sessions will support students in putting into practice the approaches presented in the lectures.
Assignments: 50% Examination: 50%
Knowledge and understanding objectives are assessed mainly through the examination.
Attitudes, values and belief objectives are assessed mainly through the examination and assignment work.
Practical skills objectives are assessed mainly through assignment work.
Relationships, communication and team work objectives are assessed mainly through assignment work.
12 hours per week including lectures, laboratory sessions and private study.
High-tech lecture theatre with data display and internet connection, with a PC and facility to plug in a laptop, for two hours per week throughout the semester.
Tutorial/lab will normally be scheduled in the flexible learning space (i.e. studio) with access to networked computers, discussion and group-work facilities (flexible desk arrangments, white boards and data projector). The studio will need to be equipped with the Standard Operating Environment.
One lecturer per semester. One tutor per laboratory session per semester.
A commercial database management package and XML editor package
Adequate copies of at least the recommended texts listed above.
