This subject investigates the design and implementation of applications for handheld/portable devices. Students will learn about different operating systems and development environments, and also the hardware & software technologies relating to mobile devices.

2005: Existing unit CSE3211 Handheld Applications and Operating Systems being updated to fit into the new BITS degree structure with new FIT code.

Role of Unit (09 Jul 2005, 12:25am)

FIT3061 Handheld Applications and Operating Systems is an elective 3rd level unit in the Caulfied BITS major in Systems Development.

This unit extends the knowledge students gained in FIT1001, FIT1002, FIT1005 and FIT1007 with specific emphasis on mobile communication programming and technologies.

Relevance of Unit (18 Jul 2005, 2:11pm)

Students undertaking majors in Systems Development need a more advanced level of programming than is provided in the faculty core. This unit extends the knowledge and skills gained in FIT1001, FIT1002, FIT1005 and FIT1007.

Handheld computing, "Lite" Application Development, Architecture, User Interaction. Handheld Operating Systems, Application development environments, Handheld - database connectivity. Use of emulators and test suites. Construction of handheld applications, desktop synchronisation and the separation of computing tasks. Use of modems, cameras, infrared, serial communcation and TCP/IP. Contexts for deploying handheld computing, user interaction, modality, screen design, and desktop integration.
