Network management is an area of interest for students hoping to find employment in the field of data communications. This course develops student knowledge of the techniques and systems for network management.
2005: Existing unit CSE3153 Network Administration being updated to fit into the new BITS with Systems Development major degree structure with new FIT code.
FIT3054 is an elective 3rd level unit in the Caulfield BITS major in Systems Development.
This unit extends the knowledge students gained in FIT1005 with specific emphasis on network technologies and their management.
It will provided students intending to follow a career in the area of data communications and networking management and administration the opportunity to focus on relevant issues.
At the end of the unit, the students should have an understanding of the role of a network administrator, and have been introduced to a range of hardware and software tools for network administration and management.

The subject provides students with fundamentals and theoretical foundations of network administration. Specific topics include local, metropolitan and wide area networks - protocols and capabilities, IPX, TCP/IP, CSMA/CD, token-passing, frame relay, ATM, etc.; the network administrator - function and responsibilities; network issues - planning, implementation, fault diagnosis and recovery; management - standards for management, SNMP, DMI, remote management in-band and out-of-band.
