This is the first of 2 core industry experience units for the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems, Bachelor of Computing, Bachelor of Information Systems and Bachelor of Network Computing. It amalgamates all IE units in these programs.

Updated Pre-reqs to indicate that off-campus offering of FIT3047 is only available to BITS Gippsland DE students. Change to be implemented for Sem 1,2011.

15/06/2018: Admin - updating prerequisites on behalf of the CE to allow for progression of mid-year intake students. Students must have completed 72 credit points rather than 84 cp to enrol in this unit.

22/06/2018: Admin - The above change to be effective from Semester 1, 2019.

1/10/2019: 1. teaching mode to on campus (included placement before, placement now has its own unit code; and 2. removing Summer FIT3048 2020/2021, so now that we are moving 3048 to semester 1 instead of Summer, the number of pre req.s can be changed to indicate that this unit is the first part of a capstone unit. Previously due to no 3048 in semester 1, students who started midway could not complete their degree in the stated time. Effective semester 1, 2020.

This unit is the first of two third year industry experience project units of study for most majors in the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (BITS) and the Bachelor of Business Information Systems (BBIS). Students who complete an IBL placement are not eligible for the Industrial Experience project units.

These industry experience units allow students to experience the ambiguity and complexity of developing and delivering a real IT application in a supported environment. It gives them the opportunity to research and develop new skills, and apply the skills and knowledge they have gained throughout their degree, assisting in transition to professional work in the IT industry.

At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

1. explain how IT applications are developed, including all aspects of the development process.
2. explain the roles and responsibilities of clients, system users, management and developers in a development project
3. apply, in a practical setting, aspects of the theoretical work covered in their course
4. develop an IT application using a prescribed methodology, conducting all activities associated with the development methodology
5. work with clients or client representatives, communicating effectively with them to meet their requirements
6. operate effectively as a member of a development team
7. evaluate, assess and communicate both personal and team progress and learning, thus engaging in meaningful reflective practice

In their final year of study, students are given the opportunity to develop new skills and apply the knowledge and skills they have gained, in the development of an IT application for a real world client. In teams, students design, develop and deliver an IT applications for a client, manage the project through all its development stages, communicate effectively with all project stakeholders and develop project documentation to a professional standard. Students also present their project work to academics and other groups, attend unit seminars, and contribute in a professional and committed manner to the work of their team.

FIT3047 is the first of two industry experience units for most majors in the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems and Bachelor of Information Technology, the Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences, and the Bachelor of Business Information Systems. After successful completion of this unit, students must enrol in and pass FIT3048 to complete their industry experience project requirements.

On-campus

Work-integrated learning, industry-based learning and experiential learning. In this unit we create an authentic industry based experience. Groups of students work in teams with support and mentoring from academic staff to develop and deliver a working and complete system for a real client to industry standards.

In-semester assessment: 100%

As the unit is project-based an examination would not be a suitable way to assess the student's achievement of the learning objectives, as a result the assessment is 100% based on in-semester deliverables.

FIT

For students in the Bachelor of Information Technology (C2000) and BCIS (4307): (One of FIT1045, FIT1053, FIT1048 or FIT1051) and FIT1047 and FIT1049 and (one of FIT2001 or FIT2099) and FIT2002 and (one of FIT2094 or FIT3171) and must be core in the student's degree program and completion of a total of 90 points towards the degree.
