FIT3046 (operating environments) is a core unit introduced for third year undergraduates for the degree of Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (majoring in Applications Development and Networks) at Gippsland from 2006.

Reasons for Change (19 Nov 2020, 11:58am)

This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

Added FIT2070 in Prohibitions. In 2011, FIT2070 replaces FIT2022, which has been in Prohibitions.

8 June 2017. On behalf of CE (Johan emailed request to change), updating exam hours and weighting to meet updated University Policy. Effective S1 2018

02/11/2017 - FIT1047 has replaced FIT1031 and therefore both these units will be considered as equivalent pre-requisites for this unit.

27/11/2017 - Admin: updating Reasons for Change on behalf of CE - amending learning outcomes for compliance.

20/9/2019: Admin - updating exam duration to include additional 10 minutes as per University requirement.

19/11/2020: Admin - this unit was disestablished at FEC 5/20 on 12/11/2020 as it is no longer required.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (29 Oct 2009, 6:14pm)

This is a third year core unit for students majoring in Applications development and networks in the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (BITS) at Gippsland. The unit enables students to understand the hardware and software mechanisms and helps them become familiar with the principle differences between common major operating systems such as Windows and Linux.

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

  1. Describe the purpose, components and functions of operating systems
  2. Describe and distinguish between various strategies used by different operating systems for efficiently managing system resources and running applications
  3. Apply a range of algorithms used by operating systems for scheduling of processes and allocation of system resources
  4. Apply strategies for inter-process communication and synchronization in multi-programming systems
  5. Describe the use of various techniques for implementing security and protection of systems, resources, and users
  6. Identify the principal differences between common major operating systems such as Windows and Linux

Processes and threads: interprocess communication, scheduling. Deadlock: detection, prevention, avoidance. Memory management: allocation, swapping, virtual memory. Input/output principles and examples: disks, graphical user interfaces, network terminals. File systems: files, directories, disk space management. Security: authentication, cryptography, common attacks, principles of secure system administration. Case studies: Characteristics of major PC operating systems such as Linux and Windows.

  • Off-campus students generally do not attend lecture and tutorial sessions, however should plan to spend equivalent time working through the relevant resources and participating in discussion groups each week.

  • A minimum of 8 hours independent study per week for completing lab and project work, private study and revision.
