This is a core unit for the Internet Systems major in the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (BITS). This unit forms part of a group of three units: FIT1011 Web systems 1, FIT2028 Web systems 2 and FIT3043 Web systems 3, which cover aspects of web based application development. From FIT1011 as a basis, students cover different aspects of web development in the two subsequent units. This unit is relevant in that it provides students with further study in web based applications, which is vital to this major.

At the completion of this unit students will have:

• an understanding of web environments and their components;
• an understanding of the principles of object oriented Internet applications development;
• the knowledge and skills to design and implement web based applications, using a server side applications development environment;
• the knowledge and skills to design and implement mobile applications;
• the knowledge and skills to implement data stores in web based applications;
• a professional attitude towards the development of web based information systems.

This unit is offered online using the Walkabout u-learning environment. All learning materuials are available from the unit web site. Students can get assistance with their work in on campus help sessions, or through Skype contact with the lecturer.

Bounded task based learning is used.

Examination (3 hours): 50%; In-semester assessment: 50%

Students must gain a satisfactory result in both the practical and exercises work and the exam to gain a pass in the unit. The examination must be sat at a Monash campus.
