This is a core unit in the Bachelor of Computer Science, BA/BCS, BSc/BCS and computer science major in BSc degree. It was introduced as part of the faculty restructure. Previously these degrees had a core unit CSE3301. FIT3036 is based on CSE3301.
Review of all degree structures in FIT for 2011
30/11/2015 - Updated objectives to learning outcomes for AQF compliance as approved at UGPC 5/15 (Item 9.1).
18/09/2020 Admin: Update to include new assessment and teaching approach fields as per Handbook requirements.
19/11/2020: Admin - this unit was disestablished at FEC 5/20 on 12/11/2020 as it is no longer required.
This unit gives students a chance to put into practice the skills they have learnt in core and elective units in their degree. Normally, it will be the first time they have had to tackle a problem of this magnitude and complexity. Successful completion improves both practical programming skills and theoretical knowledge. It is based on CSE3301 Computer Science Project.
The unit provides practical experience in designing, developing and testing a non-trivial computer science project. Projects are generally software-based, although sometimes they may involve hardware development or investigation of theory. Projects cover the whole process of software (or hardware) development, from analysis through design to implementation and testing. Comprehensive written documentation on the project is required. Students are assigned in groups to a project supervisor. The list of projects to be offered by individual lecturers will be available at the beginning of semester, and students will be assigned to projects in the first week of semester.
On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

Projects are generally software-based, although sometimes they may involve hardware development or investigation of theory. Projects cover the whole process of software (or hardware) development, from analysis through design to implementation and testing. Comprehensive written documentation on the project is required. Students are assigned in groups to a project supervisor. There are no lectures in this unit, although students will be expected to attend regular meetings with their project supervisor.
For projects students will normally need access to a computer, programming environment and network infrastructure for submission of the final deliverables.
Individual requirements will be identified by project supervisors.
Recommended resources
Any required or recommended textbooks will be determined by individual project supervisors on a case-by-case basis.
On-campus
Problem-based learning Students are encouraged to take responsibility for organising and directing their learning with support from their supervisors
Projects are assessed by individual project supervisors.
Minimum total expected workload equals 12 hours per week comprising:
(a.) Contact hours for on-campus students:
(b.) Additional requirements (all students):
