FIT3028 Multimedia Concepts and Applications is introduced as a level three elective unit for the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (BITS) offered by the Gippsland school of Information Technology in the Faculty of Information Technology (FIT). It provides exposure to an important application of computer technology and programming, not otherwise covered in the course, that may be of interest to students preparing for industry.
This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

This is a third level IT elective in the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (BITS) majors in Applications Development and Networks or Business Systems. The unit aims to provide students the opportunity to gain understanding and knowledge of the state of art, issues and technologies for building and developing multimedia applications. In this unit, students can develop not only theoretical and practical foundations but also skills for creating complete multimedia applications.
The opportunity to acquire understanding of the concepts that underlie multimedia technologies and skills in multimedia development is important for graduates completing a degree in information technology and systems. All graduates completing this unit will achieve the capability of developing a multimedia/web-based application.

The unit provides the basic concepts of multimedia, multimedia elements and security and privacy issues required for multimedia applications. This unit also introduces the basic processes of analysis and design for developing a complete functional specification for a multimedia/web-based application. In addition to this, it also provides an overview of the application of programming languages and detailed knowledge of multimedia authoring tools required for implementing a multimedia/web-base application. Students will have hands-on experience on analysis, design and implementation of a multimedia/web-base application.
2 hrs lectures/wk, 2 hrs laboratories/wk
Tutorial/Lab: computer laboratory with projector, PCs with Windows platform and sound equipment, and multimedia authoring tools. OCL students will spend 12 hours per week working though study guides and on-line learning materials, prescribed reading, practical and assignment work, and communications with lecturer and other students.
