The demand for middleware based technologies has been popular with the need to interconnect heterogenous applications and operating systems. Middleware provides platforms and models to accommodate the increasing multi-vendor mobile, desktop and distributed applications and operating systems that require integration.

This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

15/11/2011 Updating prerequisite requirements by adding FIT1031 to accommodate new version of the BITS. To be implemented for Semester 1, 2012.

1/2/2013 Unit has been completely redeveloped in order to cater to student demand for more relevant/up to date content, such as Android and iOS development. To be implemented for S1, 2013. This unit differs from FIT2081 in that it investigates all aspects of mobile applications development including data management, audio, graphics, cameras, interface design, gesture interfaces and GPS use. This unit will cover iOS as well as Android development.

7/2/2014 Unit has been updated to have a 100% in-semester assessment from Semester 1, 2014 as the unit focuses on the development of practical applications and is best assessed through the design and implementation of working applications.

This unit is an elective unit within the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (BITS). It is an approved elective for the Applications Development major within the BITS. Providing skills in the area of Adroid and iOS development is relevant both within the Apps Dev't major and the wider BITS degree. The unit provides practical skills in the apps development area as well as an overview of the history and importance of apps in mobile computing.

At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

• recall the history of mobile platforms and the development of software for those platforms;
• describe the MVC design pattern and explain the importance of this design pattern in mobile applications development;
• analyse and distinguish between the design considerations for mobile application interface development and traditional interfaces;
• analyse and implement the use of graphic and audio components in the development of mobile applications;
• design, construct and publish applications for mobile platforms with particular focus on Android and IOS;

This unit focuses on the design, construction and deployment of mobile applications, with particular focus on Android and iOS platforms. Areas such as mobile data management and networking, MVC design patterns, and mobile GUI design considerations will be explored. The unit will emphasise hands-on, practical experience with actual devices and emulators.
