FIT3003 Business intelligence and data warehousing (29 Oct 2009, 6:13pm) [ BUS INT DATA WHSG (26 May 2005, 11:51am)]

Reasons for Introduction

Reasons for Introduction (11 Apr 2005, 12:05pm)

This is a Further IT core unit in the BBIS

Reasons for Change (07 Sep 2021, 9:11pm)

This unit has been updated to reflect the requirements of BBIS students for (a) increased knowledge of the new database and datawarehousing technologies that have evolved since the introduction of the unit, and (b)increased knowledge of Business Intelligence technologies, that have also developed substantially since the introduction of the unit.

In addition, this unit is now complemented by the unit FIT3152 Data science, introduced as a co-core to the BBIS in 2013. As FIT3152 covers machine learning techniques, decreasing the emphasis of data mining in FIT3003 will minimize the overlap between the two units. A change in the database platform used in FIT3003 (from Microsoft to Oracle) will also refresh the practical component of the unit, ensuring students are familiar with a database platform that is currently used widely in business

The exam duration is changed to a 3-hour exam to reflect the advanced level of unit, which is a third year undergraduate unit. This is to be implemented starting from semester 2/2014.

SEPT 2015: This unit has been updated as part of the Monash Course Architecture initiative for implementation in 2016.

06/04/2017: Adding reasons for Change on behalf of Chief Examiner. Examination hours updated to meet new University Examination Procedures. Effective S2 2017.

12/06/2017: Admin - updating location of offering to reflect actual campus offerings at the ADE's request.

24/9/2019: Admin - updating exam duration to include additional 10 minutes as per University requirement.

12/3/2020: The unit will be offered in a flipped/blended mode in semester 2/2020 (updated workload), and an inclusion of advanced data warehousing data architecture. This is one of the action plans from last year offering feedback.

8/04/2020: Add FIT3171 as an alternative prerequisite (to FIT2094)

4/5/2020: As the MSA course 4307 Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences is in teach-out, the MSA offering of this unit has been re-coded to FZA3003 effective Semester 1, 2021. These units will be managed by South Africa and therefore no separate Monatar entries will be made

18/09/2020 Admin: Update to include new assessment and teaching approach fields as per Handbook requirements.

7/09/2021: Change of delivery structure, focusing on lectures and laboratory activities.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (14 Sep 2015, 3:04pm)

This unit is a core unit in the third year of the Bachelor of Business Information Systems and in the Bachelor of Information Technology Business Information Systems major. It is part of the BBIS Decision Support Systems stream. Together with FIT2017 and FIT3022, this unit aims to provide students with sufficient DSS related knowledge for the role of a business analyst, as well as for undertaking advanced study/research in the area of DSS.

Decision making spans all the areas of a modern business enterprise. The Business IT graduate is very likely to encounter the need for effective decision support as they enter the workforce. This unit equips BBIS graduates with the skills that will prove to be immediately useful.

Objectives

At the completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. design multi-dimensional databases and data warehouses;
  2. use fact and dimensional modelling;
  3. implement online analytical processing (OLAP) queries;
  4. explain the roles of data warehousing architecture and the concepts of granularity in data warehousing;

Synopsis (23 Sep 2013, 3:05pm)

Automation and the use of technological tools have resulted in the accumulation of vast volumes of data by modern business organisations. Data warehouses have been set up as repositories to store this data and improved techniques now result in the speedy collection and integration of such data. OLAP technology has resulted in the faster generation of reports and more flexible analysis based on the data repositories. This unit will explore the concepts of data warehousing and OLAP, covering the data processing technological requirements for data warehousing and OLAP and will provide hands on experience on designing data warehousing and OLAP systems.
