Unit Code, Name, Abbreviation

FIT3002 Applications of data mining - disestablished (28 Apr 2021, 3:20pm) [ DATA MINING (29 Oct 2009, 6:13pm)]

Reasons for Introduction

Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

Data mining is an interdisciplinary field bringing together techniques from machine learning, pattern recognition, statistics, databases, and visualization to address the issue of information extraction from large databases. The data mining unit is a core unit in the Business Systems major of the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems course, and an elective in the Applications Development and Networks major, offered at Gippsland, Malaysia and South Africa.

This unit is to serve as an advanced study for students who have completed FIT1004 (Database) and would like to study how to apply the new techniques to unlock the information and knowledge in large databases. The "applications of data mining" subject offers students an opportunity to study this fast growing field: "80% of the Fortune 500 companies are currently involved in a data mining pilot project or have already deployed one or more data mining production systems." (E. Simoudis, foreword in Cabena, P., Hadjinian, P., Stadler, R., Verhees, J. & Zanasi, A., Discovering Data Mining: from concept to implementation, Prentice Hall, 1997.). This unit will offer and equip students with interdisciplinary skills that will be in use in many corporations when they graduate.

28/4/2021 - Unit disestablished at FEC 2/21 Item 6.2

Reasons for Introduction (23 May 2005, 2:29pm)

The unit is being created for inclusion in the core of the BITS major in Business Systems, consistent with the recommendations of the Faculty of IT review completed in 2004.

Reasons for Change (08 Jun 2017, 09:02am)

June 2017: Admin - Adding Reasons for Change - Updating exam hours from 3 to 2 hours as required by new University Examination procedures, effective S1 2018.

Amended workload and assessment for Sem 1, 2013 implementation. It aims to introduce "peer-instruction" by replacing lectures with more engaging activities in workshops. Students are required to view the 2012 MULO lecture recordings before coming to the class. Instead of lecture, students engage in discussion and presentation of a specific task each week, and also have the opportunity to ask questions on the weekly topic.

This will result the following changes:

  • Assessment
  • * The percentage of exam reduces from 60% to 50%.

    * The in-semester assessment increases from 40% to 50%, to include the assessment of the activities in workshops.

  • Workloads
  • Instead of 2 hours lectures and 2 hours laboratories/tutorials per week, it will have 2 hours workshops (for the new activities) per week and 2 hours laboratories for six weeks.

Resource implication: MSA has 75 students in 2012. These students can be accommodated in two separate workshops per week. Because the 2-hour laboratories are run in six weeks only, the total number of contact hours for the proposed changes would be smaller than that in the existing offering. The total number of students in Gippsland and OCL is 20 in 2012. The proposed change has no resource implication in Gippsland.

04/11/2010: Amended pre-reqs for Sem 1,2011 implementation. FIT2010, a second year version of FIT1004, is included as an alternative pre-requisite unit. FIT1004 is an existing pre-requisite unit.

29/10/2009: This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (29 Oct 2009, 6:13pm)

This is a third level core unit in the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (BITS) major in Business Systems, and an elective in the Applications Development and Networks major.

    Synopsis (29 Oct 2009, 6:13pm)

In the modern corporate world, data is viewed not only as a necessity for day-to-day operation, it is seen as a critical asset for decision making. However, raw data is of low value. Succinct generalisations are required before data gains high value. Data mining produces knowledge from data, making feasible sophisticated data-driven decision making. This unit will provide students with an understanding of the major components of the data mining process, the various methods and operations for data mining, knowledge of the applications and technical aspects of data mining, and an understanding of the major research issues in this area.
