FIT2089 is a core unit in the Mobile Communications major being introduced by the South Africa School of IT, as part of the new Bachelor of IT degree.

Reasons for Change (19 Nov 2020, 11:57am)

Introduction for course architecture programs. Effective semester 2/2016

June 2017 - Admin: adding Reasons for Change - Updating exam hours from 3 to 2 hours as required by new University Examination procedures, effective S1 2018.

25/06/2018: Admin - adding reasons for change - Update to assessment removing the 30 minute reading and noting time from the exam.

20/9/2019: Admin - updating exam duration to include additional 10 minutes as per University requirement.

4/5/2020: As the MSA course 4307 Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences is in teach-out, the MSA offering of this unit has been re-coded to FZA2089 effective Semester 2, 2020. These units will be managed by South Africa and therefore no separate Monatar entries will be made

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (02 Sep 2015, 2:25pm)

This unit is a level 2 requirement for the Mobile Communications major. It builds on FIT1044 Mobile Communications 1 and FIT1047 Introduction to computer systems, networks and security, and will introduce students to wireless network standards relevant for mobile devices and the Internet of Things.

Objectives

At the completion of this unit, students should:

  1. be able to explain the principles of wireless communication;
  2. understand the role of standardisation bodies for wireless communication;
  3. be able to explain how current wireless networking standards operate;
  4. be able to give a functional description of the components of current wireless networking standards;
  5. be able to describe the architecture and mechanism of current wireless networking standards;
  6. be able to explain the Internet of Things;
  7. appreciate and understand the relevance of each wireless network standard;
  8. be able to design and demonstrate how a wireless network can be applied to solve a real-life problem.

This unit will cover wireless network standards relevant for mobile devices, as well as the ubiquitous integration between different network types. This includes network architectures, operational techniques and functions of the infrastructural components used in these networks. Attention will be given to the Internet of Things, with specific reference to implementations in different kinds of organisations.
