Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (17 Jul 2013, 1:57pm)

FIT2082 Research project 2 forms part of the core of the BICA. It is designed to provide students with first-hand experience in conducting a small research project using the research and communication skills taught in FIT2083 Research methods in computer science or FIT2084 Research methods in information systems and information management.

It supports the BICA learning outcomes of: (4) understanding and appreciation of the ethical and professional issues that arise in IT practice and research, and the importance of adhering to ethical and professional guidelines; (5) ability to work as an effective member or leader of teams; (6) ability to communicate proficiently to a multi-disciplinary audience by: listening, speaking, reading and writing English for professional practice and to communicate research results; (7) understanding and knowledge of research methodologies used in the IT discipline and of the different organizational contexts in which IT research is performed; (8) ability to undertake a significant independent research informed by advanced studies in IT including critical literature analysis, choice of appropriate methodology and conducting the research project; (9) strong problem-solving skills, the ability to undertake independent learning and to apply analytical thinking.

Objectives

Objectives (10 Sep 2015, 3:21pm)

At the completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. participate as a member of a research group;
  2. demonstrate how to conduct IT research;
  3. critically analyse and assess previous approaches to solve a particular research problem;
  4. formulate a research hypothesis and chose an appropriate methodology to evaluate that hypothesis;
  5. conduct the experiment and/or implementation in order to evaluate the hypothesis;
  6. demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate your research findings both orally and in writing.

Synopsis (10 Sep 2015, 3:22pm)

This unit builds upon FIT1041 and FIT2083 or FIT2084 and allows students to conduct an independent research project. Students will be assigned to one of the Faculty of Information Technology's research groups, an academic supervisor and a research topic. Students may work on their project individually or in groups, as determined by their supervisor. During the semester, the student will be required to participate in research group events including seminars and presentations.

Teaching Methods

Mode (17 Jul 2013, 12:13pm)

On-campus

Special teaching arrangements (01 Oct 2020, 09:44am)

Research activities Each student will conduct a small research project under supervision in one of the Faculty's research groups. This provides the student with hands on experience in how research is conducted and introduces them to the research that is taking place in the Faculty.

Assessment

Assessment Summary (01 Oct 2020, 09:47am)

In-semester assessment: 100%. This will be based upon the quality of the research project and the oral and written presentations.

Midway through the semester the students will be required to give an oral presentation describing the research question, a critical analysis of relevant literature and their proposed hypothesis and research methodology. At the end of the semester the students will be required to give an oral presentation to the research group describing the results of their project and to provide a written report. They will also be required to keep a logbook detailing progress on their project and attendance at research group seminars etc.

  1. Assignment 1: Project Specification: 10% - ULO ?
  2. Assignment 1: Project Presentation: 15% - ULO ?
  3. Assignment 2: Workbook: 15% ULO ?
  4. Assignment 3: Final Report and Project: 60% - ULO ?

Workloads

Workload Requirements (01 Apr 2015, 1:58pm)
