Reasons for Introduction

Reasons for Introduction (29 May 2014, 10:58pm)

This unit was developed as part of the restructure of the BITS carried out as part of the IT faculty review in 2010. It is a level 2 elective unit in the Enterprise Information Management major of the BITS.

The unit has a very important content for the degree and ACS accreditation, but the students could not recognize it with the current name. Hence, a new name is proposed for the offering in 2015, second semester

Reasons for Change (30 Nov 2017, 3:13pm)

28/05/2014 - Admin minor edit to CEs update to change objectives to learning outcomes for AQF compliance.

30/11/2017 - Unit disestablished at FEC 5/17 Item 7.3.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (05 Aug 2010, 3:37pm)

In its comments on the BITS during the 2009 faculty review, the review panel recommended that the course should include a stronger emphasis on the importance of information architecture to the management of information in organizations. This unit meets that recommendation.

The unit builds on the basic concepts of organizational use of information in the level 1 common core units in the Enterprise Information Management major. It aims to provide students with a detailed introduction to organizational needs for information architecture, explain commonly-used approaches to information architecture development and give them practice in the use of popular techniques. In this way they will gain a clear understanding of the role which Information Architects play and the career paths available for IT professionals with skills in the field.

The unit has strong similarities in purpose and content to the existing unit FIT2055. It has been kept separate from FIT2055, and given a separate name and code because Sunway campus wishes to retain FIT2055 in its present form as part of a minor sequence in multimedia website development. This would mean a narrower focus than would be suitable for this unit.

Objectives

Objectives (28 May 2014, 11:11am)

At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  • define the basic aims and purposes of information architecture and understand its importance to the management and use of information in an organisation;
  • explain a variety of approaches commonly used for the development of information architectures, and understand the key principles behind them;
  • conduct a business requirements analysis, and a user needs analysis, for the purposes of developing an information architecture;
  • critically evaluate an information architecture and assess its suitability for a given range of user needs;
  • identify and explain the phases and processes involved in planning and implementing an information architecture project or a program;
  • recognise the varying perspectives of different disciplines and professional groups and their contribution to the development of an information architecture;
  • use a range of tools and techniques (eg blueprints, wireframes, card sorting, affinity diagrams, content maps, personas), and information architecture software in the process of developing an information architecture;
  • design, construct and implement an information architecture for a given example using a popular web content management system (eg, Drupal).

    Synopsis (05 Aug 2010, 3:16pm)

    This unit provides a broad introduction to the rapidly-expanding field of information architecture (IA). IA is a major area of concern for any organization which has a business need to store and manage large and varied collections of data. The unit explains the nature and purpose of IA as a field of study and examines typical IA needs of large organizations. It examines a variety of approaches to the task of IA development and the techniques commonly associated with them. Particular emphasis is given to developing practical skills in techniques for developing architectures and to applying a range of popular IA tools and techniques commonly used in IA projects.
