This unit was developed as part of the faculty review of the BITS in 2010. FIT2077 is a core unit for ICT and Application Development majors in the BITS. The content is mainly taken from FIT3118 Database Design and Implementation that is currently offered as an elective in BITS.

Reasons for Change (19 Nov 2020, 11:55am)

14/05/14 - Admin update: minor change to learning outcomes (as approved by ADE).

12th Feb 2013 - FIT2077 and FIT4038 have been co-taught for a number of years. For several reasons including student feedback and the difficulty of making material appropriate to both cohorts, from semester 1 2013 the units have been separated and will no longer be co-taught. The unit content was strongly driven by the PG cohort during the co-teaching. The intention of this change is to align the unit better with an extension of the common core unit FIT1004 (hence the change of name)

20/9/2019: Admin - updating exam duration to include additional 10 minutes as per University requirement.

19/11/2020: Admin - this unit was disestablished at FEC 5/20 on 12/11/2020 as it is no longer required.

FIT1004 provides a general overview of data management issues in organisation and taking relational database as an example of technology use for data management. FIT2077 provides further in depth discussion on issues related to the design and implementation of relational database and unstructured data.

At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  • design a database model, from a given scenario, using the Extended Entity Relationship model
  • demonstrate a fluency with relational algebra commands
  • create triggers, procedures and functions to enhance the logic stored in a database
  • analyse SQL query operations to optimise their performance
  • create XML documents and schemas to represent a given scenario
  • implement, and manipulate, XML structure in a database
  • describe the role played by Data Warehouses and Business Intelligence (BI) with respect to "Big Data"

    This unit extends the study from the common core unit FIT1004 Data Management. FIT2077 will introduce more advanced concepts in the areas of database design, SQL, query optimisation and the handling of unstructured data (XML) both externally and within a database. The issue of "Big Data" and the role played by BI technologies and data warehouses will be explored.
