This unit was developed as part of the restructure of the BITS carried out as part of the IT faculty review in 2010. It is a core unit in the Applications Development major of the BITS, and also serves as an elective in the Information and Communication Technology major.
30/11/2017 - Unit disestablished at FEC 5/17 Item 7.3.
23 July 2014- Made minor change to objectives on advice from Director Education Quality.
08 June 2014 - Changes to Learning Outcomes as required by University.
08 Jun 2014 - Assessment weighting changed from 40% in-semester and 60% exam to 50% in-semester and 50% exam. Students will not be required to present and defend proposed software solutions as it is determined that student learning can be more accurately measured using this method as opposed to a written exam. For implementation in Semester 2,2015.
Feb 2014 - Admin amendment: adding in required workload information.
September 2012: Added a list of second programming units as alternative prerequisites to FIT1002 for 2013. Approved by CE (Janet Fraser) via email 6/09/2012.
Pre-requisites for this unit have been changed to include FIT2010 which was the Clayton version of FIT1004. Change to be implemented in Sem 1,2011.
Sem 1, 2011 (first offering of unit)resulted in high failure rate, mainly due to assignment failure. Change to assignment percentage (from 50% to 40%), to address this.
As a core unit in the Applications Development major, the unit aims to teach students the basic concepts and key skills required to build computer-based applications which require an interface between a web site and a back-end database. The widespread and rapidly expanding use of the web as an interface for on-line systems has made knowledge of this area of technology, and skills in programming applications of this kind an essential requirement for any systems developer.
The unit aims to condense and combine the key elements of three units which were offered in several of the majors in the previous version of the BITS - FIT2028, FIT3043 and FIT3057. These units covered the same set of basic concepts using a variety of different technology platforms. This unit aims to provide students with a sound understanding of the basic concepts and technologies involved, and teach them the skills required for developing systems, but will not study each technology platform in the same depth as was done in the previous set of units.
On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

This unit provides students with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to develop an application system which uses a web interface to a back-end database. The unit assumes a sound basic knowledge of programming and database concepts and skills as developed in the introductory units in these areas. The emphasis in the unit is on mastery of the key concepts and the basic knowledge and skills required to build this kind of application. The unit will provide students with an awareness of the wide range of technologies which are used to support this kind of application, but will examine only a limited number of these technologies to demonstrate the key concepts and their application.
The unit will take a strongly practical focus in examining the technology issues involved, and highlight the key issues which a developer needs to address in developing applications of this kind for real-world systems.
Minimum total expected workload equals 12 hours per week comprising:
(a.) Contact hours for on-campus students: Two hours of lectures One 2-hour laboratory
(b.) Additional requirements (all students): A minimum of 8 hours independent study per week for completing lab and project work, private study and revision.
One of FIT1002, FIT1008, FIT1035, FIT1040, FIT2034, FIT2071 or FIT2081 and one of FIT1004 or FIT2010
