FIT2070 is core in BSE, and an elective for BCS and BSc/BCS. It was introduced as part of the 2010 BSE review and will be part of the revised degree roll out of level 2 units for 2011. Previously the BSE degree had a core unit FIT2022. FIT2070 is based on FIT2022, but narrower in scope as content relating to computer architecture has migrated into FIT2069. Engineers Australia requires this material for BSE accreditation.
May 2014 - objectives changed to learning outcomes for AQF compliance.
This unit is an update based on FIT2022, as part of the 2010 BSE review .
30/11/2017 - Unit disestablished at FEC 5/17 Item 7.3.
This is a second year level core in BSE, and an elective for BCS and BSc/BCS. It covers topics from the areas of operating systems.
This unit replaces FIT2022, but removes material incorporated in FIT2022, but now to be taught in FIT2069 in more detail. It builds upon material introduced in the common core unit, FIT1001 Computer Systems, and its replacement defined in the 2009 common core review.
All BSE graduates, and BCS graduates undertaking a specialisation in computer systems, or via other degrees, require a solid and more detailed technical knowledge of operating systems than that required by a more generalist IT degree.
The material contained in FIT2070 was previously taught in FIT2022. Some breadth previously in FIT2022 has been dropped to narrow the scope to operating systems alone, and thus reduce student workloads, compared to FIT2022.
At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

This unit covers software organisation of multi-user and multi-tasking computers. The principles of operating systems are covered with reference to the underlying hardware requirements and are illustrated by case studies. Topics include operating system structure and services, multi-programming processes, CPU scheduling, memory management, device management, synchronisation, deadlocks, virtual memory and file systems.
