This unit is an undergraduate version of FIT9004. It complements FIT2067, FIT3128 and FIT3129 in providing foundation studies in the IT disciplines for non-FIT students.

This introductory unit supports the other FIT service teaching foundation units and other units which include programming and spreadsheet modelling. Understanding of computer programming is fundamental to an awareness and success in the IT disciplines.

At the completion of this unit students will have -

A knowledge and understanding of:

• the fundamentals of spreadsheets which will provide them with an understanding of spreadsheet modelling presentation and analysis using Excel;
• the fundamentals of OO concepts;
• the Excel object model;
• how to create Excel macros;
• the basics of programming including variables, data types, control structures, subroutines and functions;
• how to create custom dialog boxes and custom forms using VBA;
• how to create non-trivial applications using Visual Basic for Applications;
• the Internet and XHTML.

Developed the skills to:

• create Excel macros;
• create executable programs with custom dialog boxes and custom forms using appropriate software tools.

Demonstrated the communication skills necessary to:

• work co-operatively with a team of IT peers on the development of computer programs.

This unit provides an introduction to the principles and practice of programming for business applications. This includes an overview of spreadsheet modelling and a detailed introduction to programming with Excel including general programming concepts, the syntax and semantics of a current business programming language, design and development of graphical user interfaces.
