As part of the redevelopment of the systems development major in the BITS, CASIT proposes the removal of FIT2023 (organisational Problem Solving) from the core, and its replacement with a unit which would give students a thorough grounding in operating systems concepts. In addition, it was felt that students in the systems development major should be exposed to Unix/Linux. This is predicated on industry relevance. Given not only the large established base of Unix systems, but also the rapid growth evident in particular in Linux installations in the commercial environment, experience with Unix/Linux is important for our graduates.
FIT2065 is a redevelopment of an existing unit, CSE3208 Unix programming, which is long established and popular with students. CSE3208 emphasises shell programming. This redevelopment makes this unit an appropriate core unit for second year BITS Systems Development and Security students.
May 2014 - Update to learning outcomes for AQF compliance.
Updated prerequisites for new common core (discussed with CE).
This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.
28/4/2021 - Unit disestablished at FEC 2/21 Item 6.2
This is a second year core unit in the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (BITS) majors in Systems Development and Security. It is suitable for other FIT students to take as an elective unit within their degree.
This unit builds on the basic descriptive knowledge of computer systems gained by BITS students in their first year, particularly through FIT1001. It introduces students, in more detail, to the role and implementation contexts of operating systems, emphasising the UNIX operating system. It provides students with a strong basis for further study in technical areas of computer systems, and also exposes them to a highly industry relevant operating system. The concepts taught in this unit will give students a deeper understanding of not just UNIX, but also how the operating system environment in general governs overall computer system (hardware and software) development.
FIT3041, CSE2391, CSE4151, CSE4151 are similar units previously or currently offered by the Faculty.
The Faculty of IT aims to produce graduates who are highly conversant with core concepts. Graduates are expected to be more than familiar with tools; rather they will have a solid grounding in the underlying technologies. This includes operating systems concept and in particular the UNIX operating system. In order to position the Faculty of IT as a key industry provider of highly skilled system developers, it is important to recognise the importance of Unix/Linux as a platform for commercial and research system development.
At the completion of this unit students should be able to:
020117
The main topics covered in this unit include computer systems, operating systems, process management and coordination, memory management including modern implementations of virtual memory, file systems, operating system security, shell variant scripting, regular expressions, Unix utilities, Unix file system, Unix system administration and installation, Unix programming, research and development.
Minimum total expected workload equals 12 hours per week comprising:
(a.) Contact hours for on-campus students:
