FIT2058 Information and network security (DISESTABLISHED FB 05/07) (13 Dec 2007, 10:59am) [InfoNetSec (12 May 2006, 11:55am)]

Reasons for Introduction

Reasons for Introduction (20 May 2007, 10:57am)

The importance of Information and Network Security has been realised by universities and industries around the world. Therefore there is a need for unit in Information and Network Security. This unit is an important unit of any computing degree. It will provide students the understanding of Information and and Network Security that can be applied in the future at universities or in industry.

This unit is a second year core unit in the Security specialisation of the course 3334 Bachelor of Information Technology (BITS).

Role of Unit (20 May 2007, 10:59am)

This unit is a second year core unit in the security major of the BITS degree.

Relationship of Unit (20 May 2007, 1:00pm)

There are four core units in the security major of BITS degree
  • FIT 1019 Introduction to security. This units provides general overview of the need of security in current information systems. It is also exposed students to the security technologies and their usage in IT security.
  • FIT 2058 Information and Network Security. This units looks in depth aspect of securing information using cryptography technology and also securing information in network environment. The unit can be taken without the exposure to FIT1019 provided that the students have understanding of mathematical model and computer system.
  • FIT3105 Identity Management. This unit provides another important aspect of IT security, namely authentication and access control. Although it is designed at the third year level, it does not need to be taken after completing FIT2058. FIT2058 and FIT3015 can be considered as two parallel topics in IT security. The choice of year offering is based on the degree strucuture.
  • FIT3056 Secured and Trusted Software Systems. While FIT2058 and FIT3015 aim at teaching students in securing information using the computer and network infrastructure, this unit looks at securing information by securing the software that create, access and modify the information. This unit will require students to have programming knowledge and exposure to security technologies and issues

    Objectives

    Knowledge and Understanding (Cognitive Domain Objectives) (21 May 2007, 10:46am)

    At the completion of this unit, students should:

  • understand the design and analysis of cryptography techniques and their role in securing information.
  • understand and assess the performance of commonly used security algorithms and protocols;
  • differentiate between a range of standard security techniques in terms of the security they provide and the resources required;
  • apply standard security techniques to information transmitted over communication lines or stored in a database in order to provide confidentiality, authenticity and integrity;
  • understand the issues involved in information and network security in wireless and mobile environments;
  • be able to assess the performance of security systems in wireless and mobile environments.
  • understand the need of intrusion detection in IT security;
  • understand the role of security audit and its related design and implementation issues;
  • Practical Skills (Psychomotor Domain Objectives) (20 May 2007, 11:30am)

    At the completion of the unit, students should:

  • able to use current security technology in securing emails, ftp, data transfer across network.
  • Unit Content

    Summary (20 May 2007, 11:32am)

    The aim of this subject is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to identify security problems which may arise in a networked computing environment and to explore modern security technologies that may be used to prevent or resolve such security problems. The unit will cover: Design and analysis of cryptography; Security threats and counter-measures in a computing and communications system; Standard security techniques for achieving confidentiality and authenticity; Communication security; Database security; Operating system security; Wireless security; Email security; Computer viruses and Malicious codes.

    Strategies of Teaching (20 May 2007, 11:35am)

    The subject will have a 2 hours of lectures and 2 hours of tutorial/lab per week for one semester. The tutorial/lab works will emphasise problems/hands-on exercises in cryptography, digital signatures, wrappers, email security, ftp server protection, web server protection, production server protection, and related areas.

    Teaching Methods Relationship to Objectives (20 May 2007, 11:35am)

    The lecture stream will present the conceptual and theoretical aspects of information and network security, addressing all the objectives. The tutorial sessions will enhance the students' understanding of the subject material through analysing, implementing and assessing specific mechanisms and/or algorithms employed in the discipline, further addressing the objectives.

    Assessment

    Strategies of Assessment (20 May 2007, 11:36am)
