One objective of the Bachelor of Business Information Systems is to familiarise students with existing dominant management science techniques and information technologies. Such familiarity boosts the immediate productivity of students entering the work place. To maximise their competitive edge businesses have long sought to integrate all their individual business systems. These systems are very large and complex and employ unique terminology, procedures and models. Many of the larger corporations have implemented a particular system called SAP R/3 to the extent that it has become the dominant integrated business system technology. These corporations employ many of our graduate and post graduate students on completion of their studies. The demand for SAP skills in the corporate community is high and shows no sign of abating. The Faculty of Information is an Academic Partner of SAP R/3.
Add prerequisite: Completion of 24 points at 1st year level.

FIT2057 is an elective of Bachelor of Business Information Systems (BBIS).
FIT2057 uses the concepts introduced in FIT1003 and FIT2006 to analyse Enterprise Inter and Intra-organizational Integration. It does not overlap any unit within the Faculty of information Technology.
This unit is designed to provide students with an overview of the application of integrated process engineering. The unit provides an overview of different requirements for a successful implementation of inter and intra-organizational systems. FIT2057 uses different modules of SAP R/3 package to analyse integration and ARIS tool set in practical sessions.
C1. Know the evolution from Operations Support Systems and Management Support Systems to Enterprise Systems
C2. Know different vendors of Enterprise Systems packages, degree of flexibility of their product and their specific market.
C3. Understand the complexity and limitation of enterprise systems packages.
C4. Analyse different steps required to complete a typical work process in an organization.
C5. Understand what data is required to customise an Enterprise System and what different types of data used by such systems are.
C6. Understand the human side of implementation and use of such packages and the required steps to maximise the success of adoption of such systems.
A1. Value the maintenance of the highest ethical and professional standards by the analyst in evaluating different Enterprise Systems packages.
A2. Develop the ability to be productive in a teamwork environment.
A3. Develop the ability to communicate effectively with all stakeholders of an Enterprise Systems implementation project.
A4. Develop attitudes which enable the setting of reasonable expectations for Enterprise Systems adoption and performance.
P1. Have the skill to divide a typical work process on an Enterprise System into its smallest units.
P2. Have the skill to complete or modify a typical work process on an Enterprise System.
P3. Have the skills for getting around in a typical Enterprise System and to identify the link between two heavily integrated modules on such packages.
P4. Have the ability to evaluate different modules of Enterprise Systems packages to make an informed recommendation.
S1. Be able to work as part of a team retrieving, analysing, evaluating and presenting the findings of the evaluation.
S2. Be able to communicate Enterprise system related issues and content to professional work groups in organisations.
S3. Be able to work collaboratively in a team environment building relationships by enhanced skills in communication, teamwork and leadership and management.

Some initial discussion will provide background, context and motivation for a more thorough examination of integrated business systems. In order to extend and deepen the discussion of the later type of system the market leader in this area, SAP R/3, will be introduced.
The discussion of SAP R/3 will have two benefits. The most immediate will be the acquisition of specific SAP R/3 user and developer skills. At the same time students should accrue a detailed appreciation of the underlying business processes being performed. The examination of SAP R/3 from a user's perspective will proceed along two complementary fronts. First, the functionality of existing application modules (financial, logistical, human resources and workflow) will be detailed. Second, a walkthrough of the most common business processes as they are implemented across several application modules in SAP R/3 will be conducted.
The examination of SAP R/3 from a developer's perspective will involve three main topics: the 'reference model', development by configuration and development by coding (via the ABAP development workbench).
The subject will end with a discussion of planning and implementation issues involved in developing and installing an integrated business system.
This unit provides students with an overview of Enterprise Systems and is designed to describe the role of enterprise systems as part of the larger IT infrastructure of large scale organisations. The emphasis is on re-engineering business processes in an organization through the adoption of enterprise systems. SAP R/3 will be used to introduce students to the complexity of enterprise wide systems through tutorial workshops where appropriate. This will include the addition of process modelling software tasks in practical sessions using ARIS toolset (SAP R/3 reference model).
On-line material and on-line Help will be a major resource for this subject.
A text book may be prescribed (to be advised).
Assessment breakdown is as follows:
In line with the practical objectives of this subject the exam will require proof of practical knowledge as well as theoretical knowledge. The assignment and exercises will be completely practical in nature.
