This unit is a core second year unit in the Information Management major of course 3334 Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (BITS). The unit explores fundamental concepts of information management within organisations. It matches known information needs of the business organisation with Information Management (IM) services and solutions, and teaches students how to use IM tools developed to manage information within organisations.

Sunway has been added as a location of offering following the noting of a new general BITS at the Sunway campus in 2010 (refer to UGPC 5/09, item 5.1). This change requires urgent approval, for implementation Semester 1, 2010.

This is a second year core unit in the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (BITS) major in Information Management, and is available to other BITS students as an elective. It incorporates content from IMS2102 and IMS2603. The unit explores information management needs within the context of organisational practices.

All graduates studying information management need to understand the specific requirements for information management and use that arise in an organisational context.

At the completion of this unit students will have

A theoretical and conceptual understanding of:

• the main techniques used for IM in organisations;
• the purpose of facet and business analysis, and their application to the development of basic classification schemes;
• the place of information creation, representation, storage, access, retrieval, and use within organisations;
• the purpose of using various classification schemes for conducting business analysis for information requirements specification.

Developed attitudes that enable them to:

• recognise the importance of managing information and knowledge;
• recognise the concept of ownership and security of information and knowledge;
• recognise the importance of problems associated with managing information/knowledge processes within organisations;
• recognise issues related to the information lifecycle within organisations.

Gained the skills to:

• be able to evaluate the organisational context of information and its sources critically;
• be able to deploy data gathering tools and techniques relevant to the development of information products;
• be able to evaluate the usefulness of classification and metadata schemes;
• be able to create metadata records and use metadata modelling tools;
• be able to evaluate and use ICTs and IM tools to create, represent, store, access, retrieve and use information within an organisational context.

Demonstrated the teamwork skills necessary to:

• be able to work as part of a team developing information policy within an organisational context.
