Following the 2004 Review of the Faculty of Information Technology this unit forms part of the Multimedia Games Development major established within the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems degree.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (29 Oct 2009, 6:13pm)

This is a required unit in the Multimedia Games Development major and is intended to provide the necessary background in games history, hardware and the games development process so that students can develop their understanding of the multimedia development process, as it is applied in the area of games. The unit provides knowledge and skills which students can apply within their game development projects in the third year studio project/s (FIT3039/3040) and across all subsequent units.

Knowledge of game implementation techniques is an essential requirement for those students wishing to pursue a career in the game development industry. The theory enables students to design appropriate and innovative games applications and the practical elements allow students to appreciate the consequences of their design decisions.

Synopsis (29 Oct 2009, 6:13pm)

This unit examines the fundamental issues of games development. The history of games and the games industry is studied. A variety of games genre are explained and contrasted. Topics include the different contributions from members of the games development team, the types of hardware used across various platforms for game implementation, the role of games engines, the importance of physics in ensuring realism and the manner in which system analysis can be applied to games development.
