An examination of the issues required to design and maintain large and complex databases is important for those who wish to pursue a career as a database administrator, data architect or research advanced issues in the database area. Knowledge of physical file structures,their relationship to transaction loadings and to design decisons are vital. Issues of integrity, security,concurrency and recovery/backup are key areas of knowledge for those working in or researching database management.
2005: Existing unit CSE3000 Database Design and Implementation being updated to fit into the new BITS degree structure with new FIT unit code.
FIT2041 Database Design and Administration is an elective 2nd level unit in the Caulfied BITS major in Systems Development.
There is no comparable unit in the faculty.
Students undertaking a Systems Development major need an advanced understanding of database design and administration issues.

This unit looks at the design and implementation issues of database management systems. Record, file and index structures are dealt with at the basic level. Higher level details of consistency, atomicity and durability are introduced along with modern trends in databases

Knowledge and understanding objectives are achieved mainly through lectures and tutorial exercises.
Attitudes and beliefs objectives are achieved mainly through laboratory exercises and assignment work.
Practical skills objectives are achieved mainly through laboratory exercises and assignment work.
Relationships, communication and team work objectives are achieved mainly through laboratory exercises and assignment work.
Examination (2 hours) 50%: Assignment Work 50%

12 hours per week including lectures, laboratory sessions and private study.
High-tech lecture theatre with data display and internet connection, with a PC and facility to plug in a laptop, for two hours per week throughout the semester.
A laboratory with access to UNIX machine
One lecturer per semester. One tutor per laboratory session per semester.
