FIT2037 is an elective introduced for second year undergraduates in the Faculty of Information Technology

This is the first generation entry for this unit in the re-structure of FIT undergraduate programs.
FIT2037 is an elective for second year FIT undergraduate students. Its key objectives are to provide students with:
* Knowledge of the various groupware systems that support virtual teams.
* Understanding of the psychological, social and organizational issues in the development and implementation of groupware.
* Skills to use and develop groupware applications.
FIT2037 is a second year elective.
Advances in communication technlogies have dramatically changed the nature of team work. Many teams are distributed across different locations and time zones. Virtual teams are becoming prevalent in global companies and groupware has made it possible for these virtual teams to communicate, coordinate and collaborate with their team members.
This unit will survey the various types of groupware and explore the pyschological, social and organisational issues in the development and implementation of groupware. Students will also gain hands-on experience in using and developing groupware applications.
At the completion of this unit, students will have:
C1. Knowledge of the wide range of goupware systems and how they can be used to support virtual teams.
C2. Understanding of the relative strengths and limitations of the various groupware systems.
C3. Understanding of the psychological, social and organizational issues in the development and implementation of groupware.
At the completion of this unit, students will have developed attitudes that enable them to:
A1. Recognise the opportunities and limitations of the use of groupware to support virtual teams.
A2. Appreciate the pyschological, social and organisational issues in the development and implementation of groupware.
At the completion of this unit, students will have the skills to:
P1. Assess the potential scope for using groupware to support virtual teams.
P2. Identify and discuss issues and problems in using groupware in virtual teams.
P3. Identify and discuss the pyschological, social and organisational impact of developing and implementing groupware.
P4. Use and develop groupware applications.
At the completion of this unit, students will have developed the team work skills needed to:
R1. Recognise the team skills necessary for successuful development and implemetation of groupware.
R2. Appreciate the importance of using groupware to build relationships with collegues who are not colocated.

The teaching of the unit will be conducted through lectures and laboratory sessions:
* One 2-hour lecture per week for 13 weeks
* One 1-hour lab session per week for 13 weeks
* Knowledge and understanding objectives: achieved mainly through lectures.
* Attitudes, values and belief objectives: achieved mainly through lectures and assignment work.
* Practical skill objectives: achieved mainly thorough lab exercises and assignment work.
* Relationships, communication and team work objectives: achieved mainly through assignment work.
Assessment breakdown is as follows:
* Assignments (30%)
* Examination (70%)
Students must pass the examination in order to pass the unit.
* Knowledge and understanding objectives: assessed mainly through the examination.
* Attitudes, values and belief objectives: assessed through assignments and examination.
* Practical skill objectives: assessed mainly through assignments.
* Relationships, communication and team work objectives: assessed mainly through assignments.
Students should expect to spend an average of 12 hours per week for 13 weeks on this unit. The breakdown of the workload is as follows:
* Attending lectures and lab sessions: 3 hours
* Reading and preparation for lectures and lab sessions: 3 hours
* Assignments: 6 hours
High tech lecture theatre with internet access for 2 hours per week for 13 weeks
1 hour for 13 weeks per 20 students
1 lecturer and 1 tutor per lab session.
