This unit is a core subject for the business systems major of the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems.

The unit ETW1102 is now being offered under a new code, ETS1102, on the South Africa campus. This new code was added to the prerequisite list.

To prepare for TEQSA the objectives have been changed to learning outcomes. Change to be implemented from Semester 2, 2014.

This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

This is a core unit for the Business Systems major of the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (BITS). Using MAT1097 Quantitative Analysis as a foundation, this unit helps to build up students' concepts about business and their expertise in numeric modelling of business decisions.

On successful completion of this unit students should be able to:

• identify and apply principles of computer modelling to various business problems;
• formulate models of a range of real-world business problems, including static and probabilistic problems, and implement them using spreadsheets and other software;
• apply and analyse sensitivity analyses of computer models;
• interpret the results obtained from computer models and sensitivity analyses, and communicate these results to business and technical audiences;
• apply various decision analysis models to enhance individual, business and group decision making;
• explain, apply and be able to differentiate between various forecasting techniques with appropriate data.

This unit examines the principles and applications of business modelling, how a business system is used as a key component of the broad decision support system or DSS. At the completion of the subject the student should understand some of the most commonly used computer modelling techniques used in business and industry and be familiar with the applications of these techniques to the solution of business related problems. Topics will include the fundamental breakeven analysis, various types of linear programming, network models, various aspects of decision making, waiting lines systems, Monte Carlo simulation and forecasting techniques.

On campus requirements: There will be one two-hour lecture and one two-hour tutorial per week for thirteen weeks. Normal lecture theatres and lecture rooms with standard AV facilities will be sufficient for the lectures. Normal computer laboratories with networked PCs will be sufficient for the practicals.

Off-campus learning requirements: Students are required to have access to a PC with a specified minimum configuration and to the internet. This is a requirement for all OCL students enrolled in the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems. There is no residential requirement.
