The World Wide Web is a phenomenon, which has entered the computing arena in recent years. The Web has opened up new challenges for computing professionals, with an increasing number of computer applications needing to be developed for a Web environment. Students of the Net-centric major, then, need opportunities to develop the specialist knowledge and skills required to plan and implement web sites. Students need to have a sound grasp of the fundamentals of Web applications design and implementation.

This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

This unit is a second year core unit offered in the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (BITS), for the Net-centric computing, Systems Development, Security and Internet Systems majors. This unit forms part of a group of three units: FIT1011 Web systems 1, FIT2028 Web systems 2 and FIT3043 Web systems 3, which cover aspects of web based application development. From FIT1011 as a basis, students cover different aspects of web development in the two subsequent units.

At the completion of this unit students will have

A knowledge and understanding of:

• two current scripting technologies, (one server-side, one client-side) performing a variety of Internet based functions, including access to data stores;
• an approach to web based security using these technologies; and
• utilisation of asynchronous technologies in Internet applications.

Developed the skills to:

• develop server side applications to perform a variety of Internet based tasks, including access to data stores, security methods, and asynchronous technologies.

Developed attitudes that enable them to:

• show professionalism towards respecting copyright;
• require professional standards in designing and implementing web applications.

The unit covers server-side scripting: PHP structure, syntax and implementation. PHP scripting techniques for building dynamic web page interfaces for accessing server-side data stores. Implementing state-handling in a stateless environment. Strategies for enforcing data integrity, data security principles and techniques. Database and web page design concepts and their importance in commercial applications. The use of open-source PHP frameworks to provide a basic structure with which to build the web applications will also be explored. Asynchronous Javascript and XML (Ajax).
