This is a core second year unit in the Systems Development and Information Systems majors of the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems.

The unit provides students with an understanding of the systems design and implementation phases of the systems development life-cycle, and teaches basic techniques for carrying out the tasks in these phases. It enhances the student's ability to design and implement a working business system from a requirements specification. This unit builds on material taught in the common core units; FIT2001 Analysis and Design, FIT1002 Computer Programming and FIT1004 Database. This unit is a prerequisite to the Industrial Experience project.

As IT and IS develop, there is an increasing need for graduates to understand the principles and practices of the use of IT in organisations and society. All students in the Systems Development and Information Systems majors need to gain experience in Design and Implementation of Information Systems.

At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

This unit focuses on the nature of systems design and implementation as phases within the systems development process. By the end of the unit, students know the principles of how to design and implement a system, have the knowledge and skills required to conduct the main tasks typically required in these phases, and have experience in selecting and using the most suitable design and implementation techniques to develop a system from a requirements specification.

Design topics include: Transition from Analysis to Design; Preparation and Selection of design alternatives; Definition of System architecture requirements; Design Strategies-Structured, Object-oriented, Design patterns; Object-oriented design modelling; Interface Design; Systems security and access controls. Implementation topics include: Implementation planning, testing overview; data conversion; training; documentation-user and help systems; systems installation; transition to maintenance.
