FIT2022 Computer systems 2 -DISESTABLISHED AT FEC 4/10 (22 Oct 2010, 3:21pm) [ COMP SYS 2 (24 Jun 2009, 10:41am)]

Reasons for Introduction

Reasons for Introduction (02 Nov 2005, 09:28am)

FIT2022 is core in BCS, BSE, BCS/BA, BCS/LLB, and BSc/BCS, and is a core in a computer science major in BSc. It was introduced as part of the 2006 Faculty restructure and will be part of the revised degree roll out of level 2 units for 2007. Previously these degrees had a core unit CSE2302 (and CSE2324 for BSE). FIT2022 is based on CSE2302 and CSE2324. IEAust requires this material for BSE accreditation.

Reasons for Change (29 Oct 2009, 6:12pm)

This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (29 Oct 2009, 6:12pm)

This is a second year level core unit in BCS, BSE, BCS/BA, BCS/LLB, and BSc/BCS, and is core in the computer science major in BSc (and its double degrees). It covers topics from the areas of operating systems and computer architecture.

This unit replaces CSE2302 and CSE2324, and also contains material previously taught in CSE1303. It builds upon material introduced in the common core unit, FIT1001 Computer Systems.

All BCS and BSE graduates, including those undertaking a specialisation in computer science via other degrees, require a solid and more detailed technical knowledge of operating systems and architectures than that required by a more generalist IT degree.

The material contained in FIT2022 was previously spread over CSE1303, CSE2302 and CSE2324. The adoption of the Faculty common core forced out material from CSE1303 and requires the compression of material from the other two units into this unit. Some depth has been dropped to compress contact hours to that requested. This is comparable to FIT1008 (a precursor unit), but with marking occurring in the laboratories, and fits within the Science Engineering model.

Synopsis (29 Oct 2009, 6:12pm)

This unit covers software organisation of multi-user and multi-tasking computers. The principles of operating systems are covered with reference to the underlying hardware requirements and are illustrated by case studies. Topics include operating system structure and services, multi-programming processes, CPU scheduling, memory management, device management, synchronisation, deadlocks, virtual memory and file systems. Furthermore this unit explores the internal mechanism of computers and how they are organised and programmed. Topics include machine arithmetic, micro programming, caches, translation look-aside buffers, RISC machines, and pipelined and parallel organisation.
