The establishment of the BITS with a major in Applications Development and Networks, and the establishment of the common core unit FIT1031 has created the opportunity to reorganize Networks and Data Communications content offered by the Faculty at Gippsland. This new unit is the result of this development.

FIT2020 is the second core unit in Networks and Data Communications designed for students in the BITS major with Applications Development and Networks, and is available as an elective to students in other majors. It further develops knowledge of theory and applications of networks and data communications commenced in FIT1031.

2016-10-12 Added FIT1047 as an alternative to FIT1031 in the list of prerequisites. FIT1047 replaces FIT1031 under the new course architecture.

This unit is a core unit for the Applications Development and Networks major for Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (BITS) and an elective for students in other majors. This unit is a continuation of FIT1031 (or equivalent) .

At the completion of this unit students will be able to:

• describe the ISO OSI reference model;
• analyse physical layer for networking;
• explain and analyse the architecture of data link layer for networking;
• analyse the main functions and design issues of the network layer;
• describe the operation of IPv6;
• analyse the operation of TCP;
• explain and analyse integrated and differentiated services architecture;
• explain and analyse network management architecture;
• explain and analyse the basic concepts of multimedia communications and QoS.

This unit will introduce students to advances in the distributed networked environment. The unit provides knowledge of internetworking protocols, QoS for critical applications, network management and TCP/IP operation. Access to the university's computer systems through an internet service provider is compulsory for distance education students.
