FIT2008 is core in BCS, BSE, BCS/BA, BCS/LLB, and BSc/BCS, and is a core in a computer science major in BSc. It was introduced as part of the 2006 Faculty restructure and will be part of the revised degree roll out of level 2 units for 2007.

This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

This unit is a second year common core unit. It replaces CSE2/3318 Data Communications and Computer Networks, previously an elective in the in the BCS, BSE, BCS/BA, BCS/LLB, and BSc/BCS. It is a level 2 version of the first year common core unit, FIT1005 Networks and Data Communications.

The range of topics in FIT2008 is the same as for FIT1005; however, some topics will be covered in more depth reflecting the level 1 mathematical background of the BCS and BSE students, and the additional programming expertise of level 2 students.

This unit aims to provide students with an understanding of: the basic concepts in networking and data communications; practical aspects of networking; and the ability to analyse network design requirements.

All students need to have exposure to this topic area because knowledge of computer networks leads to greater understanding of system integration in distributed environment. This allows designers and programmers to specify, design, develop and debug IT applications and analyse their communication needs.

At the completion of this unit, students will have -

The ability to:

• discuss network architecture standards for open systems;
• describe ISO reference and Internet models;
• explain fundamentals and technologies of physical, data-link and network layers;
• understand the functions and architectures of LAN and WAN; and
• analyse and design LAN architecture for organisational requirements.

Developed attitudes that enable them to:

• adopt a problem solving approach;
• accept the code of professional conduct and practice; and
• act in accordance with best practice, industry standards and professional ethics.

Developed the skills to:

• gain practical skills to analyse data communication networks.

Demonstrated the communication skills necessary to:

This unit will introduce students to fundamentals of distributed networked environment. The unit provides knowledge of internetworking standards and understanding of the networking architecture, technology and operation.
