Unit Code, Name, Abbreviation

FIT2003 IT professional practice - disestablished (30 Nov 2017, 12:06pm) [IT PROF PRAC (28 Jun 2010, 1:05pm)]

Reasons for Introduction

Reasons for Introduction (08 Jul 2010, 5:30pm)

The unit was introduced as a result of the 2009-2010 Common Core Review, where a need to further develop professional and communication skills in our IT graduates was identified. It replaces FIT1003-IT in Organisations and FIT2035-Communications for IT professionals. It includes some content from both these units, and introduces new material.

Reasons for Change (30 Nov 2017, 12:07pm)

PrescribedReading; Alexandria is now used for the textbook modified Teaching/Mode; The unit if offered on campus only modified Workload/SpecialRequirements; Clarification of the requirement for computers and presentation projector in the room if there is no studio available modified Research; Accurately reflect the research skills taught in the unit modified Assessment/Summary; to move some of the workload to the exam from assignments and to assist in maintaining consistency of marks. Change from Semester 2, 2016 to coincide with the introduction of FIT1049.

While the exam only contributes 25% towards the final mark, the exam should be assessing student's written communication skills. We have many students for whom English is not their first language, so the intention is to provide them with additional time to complete the exam (the intention is definitely *not* to increase the contents of the exam). The change is to be brought in from S2, 2011.

May 2014: added sustainability to the learning outcomes.

October 2014: Changes are being introduced to include Mindfulness into FIT2003 which is a core unit that all undergraduate students in the Faculty of Information Technology are required to take. Mindfulness fits well into the subject matter of the unit as it prepares students for working in the information technology profession. It has been recognised as a need to equip the modern Information technology professional with an understanding of and skills to cope in a potentially stressful workplace.

An additional 5 contact hours will be required for the mindfulness sessions.

Berwick and Gippsland locations have been removed as they are no longer applicable.

Changes effective Semester 1, 2015.

Jan 2015: Unit Learning Outcomes updated using the recommended style and wordings.

29 Jan 2015: Reducing the number of unit learning outcomes after consultation with the CE.

23 December 2016 2 Hour exam worth 40% time change to meet Monash New standards

30/11/2017 - Unit disestablished at FEC 5/17 Item 7.3.

Workload Requirements (03 Dec 2014, 1:01pm)

Minimum total expected workload equals 12 hours per week comprising:

(a.) Contact hours for on-campus students:

  • One 2-hour lecture
  • One 2-hour tutorial
  • One 1-hour mindfulness session week 2-6
  • One 1-hour meeting week 7-12
  • (b.) Study schedule for off-campus students:

  • Off-campus students generally do not attend lecture and tutorial sessions, however should plan to spend equivalent time working through the relevant resources and participating in discussion groups each week.
  • (c.) Additional requirements (all students):

  • a minimum of 7 hours of personal study in some weeks for completing tutorial and assignment work, private study and revision.
  • Additional/Special Timetabling Requirements (22 Dec 2016, 7:24pm)

Part one of the tutorials to be scheduled in studios on campuses where studio space is available. If there is no studio rooms available, then a room with a presenter's computer with a projected display in addition to student computers is required. Part two of the tutorial for weeks two through to six are for 1 hour mindfulness sessions and require a tutorial room with no computers. For weeks seven through twelve no room resource required for the meeting. Part two of each tutorial should be linked to a meeting which is scheduled straight after the tutorial or one hour after that and shown on students timetables. Eg. All students allocated to Tutorial 1 Part 1, Monday 10-12, should be allocated to Tutorial 1 Part 2, Monday 12-1 or students that are allocated to Tutorial 2 Part 1 Monday 10-12, should be allocated to Tutorial 2 Part 2, Monday 1-2.
