FIT1047 Introduction to computer systems, networks and security (02 Sep 2015, 10:52am) [Intro CSN & Sec (02 Sep 2015, 10:53am)]

Reasons for Introduction

Reasons for Introduction (02 Sep 2015, 10:53am)

FIT1047 is a core unit introduced as part of the new 2016 degree programs BCompSci, BCompSci(Advanced) and the BInfoTech in the CNS and Mcomm majors, extended majors and minors.

Reasons for Change (17 Sep 2020, 09:21am)

Introduced as part of architecture programs. Effective semester 1/2016

Updated exam hours as per University examination procedures, effective S2 2017

A stronger focus on assignments should shift students' concentration more to learning the concepts and skills. With 2 hour exam, there is less time for long answer questions. Therefore, exam is changed from 60% to 50% and in-semester assessment increased from 40% to 50%

19/9/2019: Admin - updating exam duration to include additional 10 minutes as per University requirement.

22/12/2019: CE Malik Khan - Updating the exam component to 60%. Reason: Over the past three semester, students have performed very well in the assignment component and the overall results with HD & D are very high; and also on the other end of the grades spectrum we have student who have performed well in the assignments, but failed to pass the exam have ended with overall marks above 50%, hence giving them 49N. This was the trend over the past three semesters. Hence, exam is changed from 50% to 60% and in-semester assessment decreased from 50% to 40%

03/02/20: Admin - minor amendment to wording workload activity. Removing mention of tute and prac, as labs are run for the unit.

As the MSA course 4307 Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences is in teach-out, the MSA offering of this unit has been re-coded to FZA1047 effective Semester 1, 2021. These units will be managed by South Africa and therefore no separate Monatar entries will be made

4/6/20: changed from 60%/40% exam/in semester to 100% in semester assessment in line with discussion between Malik and FLEX team. See: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lzsvyPgocSGSgL31eBdURXoSeIQ3ARgY6XxTOIJkoCA/edit?usp=sharing intended 2x20% online tests (40% total) assignment 1 (30%) assignment 2 (30%) Adjustments to suit mixed online-face to face teaching for 2020/S2 where exam may not be suitable.

10/6/2020 included assignment breakdown for 100% in semester assessment

10/6/2020 revised workload align personal study time with current unit expectations based on assignment design and formative tasks

30/6/2020 revised workload to rename class types to tutorials and remove reference to labs

30 June 2020: included in the update is the inclusion of academic integrity and authentication

2 July 2020: Updated post FEC, to ensure authentication through final exam

17/09/2020 Admin: Update to include new assessment and teaching approach fields as per Handbook requirements.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (10 Sep 2015, 1:19pm)

Key objectives of FIT1047 Introduction to Computer system, networks and security are to prepare students so that they will:

Objectives

Objectives (06 Sep 2016, 9:09pm)

At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. analyse simple logic circuits;
  2. explain and analyse key computer structure and its operations;
  3. analyse and evaluate various strategies used by an operating system in managing the system resources and running applications efficiently;
  4. describe the operation of communication and networking models and develop simple solutions to network problems;
  5. critically assess the security threats and risks to an organisation?s information assets and propose suitable security control technologies that can be applied to reduce security risks.
