FIT1041 Research project 1 forms part of the core of the BICA. It is designed to provide students with first-hand experience in conducting a project with one of the Faculty's research groups.
It supports the BICA learning outcomes of: (5) ability to work as an effective member or leader of teams; (6) ability to communicate proficiently to a multi-disciplinary audience by: listening, speaking, reading and writing English for professional practice and to communicate research results; (7) understanding and knowledge of research methodologies used in the IT discipline and of the different organisational contexts in which IT research is performed; (9) strong problem-solving skills, the ability to undertake independent learning and to apply analytical thinking.

This unit introduces students to the research activities occurring in the Faculty of IT. It provides an opportunity to conduct a hands-on project in an area of interest to the student and to experience what it is like to be a member of a research team.
At the start of the semester the student will be assigned to one of the Faculty's research groups and assigned an academic supervisor and a project topic. Students may work individually or in groups, as determined by the supervisor of a particular topic. During the semester the student will be required to participate in research group events including seminars and presentations.
In-semester assessment: 100%. This will be based upon a demonstration of the student's project work, log book and an oral and written presentation.
At the end of the semester the students will be required to give an oral presentation to the research centre describing the results of their project and to provide a written report.
Minimum total expected workload equals 12 hours per week comprising:
