This unit was developed as part of the restructure of the BITS carried out as part of the IT faculty review in 2010. It is a core unit in the Enterprise Information Management major of the BITS.

This unit is one of the four core units in the Enterprise Information Management major which was introduced as part of the BITS review in 2010. These four core units in the major - FIT1036, FIT1037, FIT2074 and FIT2075 - address fundamental concepts in organizations, information, technology and the development of strategies for information management and systems acquisition and implementation. They aim to provide students with a grounding in the basic concepts and key themes which underly the content of the later units in the major. The units incorporate elements of FIT1003 and the level 1 and level 2 introductory units in the previous IM and IS majors. In place of the narrower discipline-based focus of those units, they blend the approaches of the two disciplines to provide a broader overview of key issues relating to organizational information needs, and the capabilities and limitations of IT-based applications to satisfy them.
The key objectives of this unit are to prepare students so that they will:
This unit replaces FIT1021 Information Use and Management and FIT2054 Information Management in Organisations, previously core units in the Information Management major of the BITS degree. As a level 1 introductory unit, it will focus on providing breadth rather than depth in its coverage of these topics, acting as a gateway to the later units which address them in greater detail.
At the completion of this unit, students should be able to:

This unit introduces fundamental concepts in information, and examines their implications for the use of IT-based systems that manage information. The management of information is a major area of concern for any organisation as it seeks to meet its objectives. The unit examines a variety of approaches to the creation, representation, storage, access, retrieval, and use of information, and the practical contribution of information management (IM) as a discipline to the achievement of such tasks. Particular emphasis will be placed upon the consequences for these practices of information-seeking behaviour by users, as well as the application of a range of popular IM tools and techniques commonly used when addressing the information needs of users.
There is no textbook for this unit. A list of relevant reading materials will be made accessible via the library.
Minimum total expected workload equals 12 hours per week comprising:
(a.) Contact hours for on-campus students:
(b.) Additional requirements (all students):
2 hour studios required in a high tech room
