FIT1031 is a core unit introduced as a part of the common core for first year undergraduates in the Faculty of Information Technology for 2011.

The changes are as a result of the 2009-2010 Common Core Review and are effective as of Semester 1, 2011.

Key objectives of FIT1031 Computers and Networks are to prepare students so that they will:

• Understand the basic internal architecture and operation of a computer and its peripherals,
• Understand the basics of operating system software and its support for software development tools,
• Understand critical factors that affect computer performance,
• Understand the basic concepts in networking leading to greater understanding of system integration in distributed environment,
• Understand the basics of how to specify, design, develop and debug IT applications, and
• Understand the basics of how to make analysis of the networking needs of IT applications.

On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

• explain the internals of a basic computer structure and its operations;
• describe the internal operation of the CPU and explain how it is used to execute instructions;
• identify factors that affect computer performance;
• explain the basics of operating systems, system software and networking concepts and apply them in simple programs;
• describe communication and networking models such as TCP/IP and OSI and develop simple solutions to network problems.

The unit introduces students to fundamentals of computer systems and networks. It provides basic knowledge of computer organisation and architecture, operating systems, and networking architecture, technology and operation.

For campuses other than Gippsland, tutorial sessions are to follow after lecture days so that no tutorials are scheduled on the same day as the lecture.

For Gippsland campus, however, lecture is to be followed by tutorial on the same day in order to encourage enhancement students to come to the campus for one day a week.
