The World Wide Web is a phenomenon which has entered the computing arena in recent years. The Web has opened up new challenges for computing professionals, with an increasing number of computer applications needing to be developed for a Web environment. Students of this degree, then, need opportunities to develop the specialist knowledge and skills required to plan and implement web sites. Students need to have a sound grasp of the fundamentals of Web design and implementation methods as a basis for building more advanced web based applications

This is a core unit of the Net-centric and Internet Systems majors for the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems. The unit gives the basics of web applications development in XHTML. Students also learn the basics of web design and scripting in a multimedia language, and XML. From here students can proceed to more advanced web systems units FIT2028 Web Systems 2 and FIT3043 Web Systems 3 to cover web based databases and client and server side based applications, and web applications for mobile devices. This unit is relevant to the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems with majors in Net-centric computing and Internet Systems, in that it provides students with the basics of web based applications, which is one of the aspects of this major.

At the completion of this unit students will have -

A knowledge and understanding of:

• the physical structure of the Internet;
• the role of mark-up languages, especially XHTML;
• the features of XHTML;
• the use of graphics and multimedia in web applications;
• the basic principles of web site design, implementation and maintenance;
• some of the legal and ethical issues associated with the Internet, especially the area of copyright.

Developed attitudes that enable them to:

• build professionalism towards respecting copyright;
• require professional standards in designing and implementing web applications.

Developed the skills to:

• write syntactically correct XHTML code;
• develop graphics suitable for web use;
• develop structurally correct web sites with intuitive navigational paradigms.

Online Day

This unit is offered online using the Walkabout u-learning environment. All learning materials are available from the unit web site. Students can get assistance with their work in on campus help sessions, or through Skype contact with the lecturer.

Bounded task based learning is used.

Examination (3 hours): 50%; In-semester assessment: 50%

Students must gain a satisfactory result in both the practical and exercises work and the exam to gain a pass in the unit. The examination must be sat at a Monash campus.
