This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data. Amended Monatar to fix minor typos in the objectives appearing in the unit guide. No other change to FIT1005 contents in Monatar. Changes for Sem 1, 2010 implementation.

This unit forms part of the common core for first year FIT undergraduate students. Its key objectives are to prepare students so they will: understand the basic concepts in networking and data communications; learn some of the practical aspects of networking; and analyse network design requirements.

All students need to have exposure to this topic area because knowledge of computer networks, leads to greater understanding of system integration in distributed environment. This allows designers and programmers to specify, design, develop and debug IT applications and analyse their communication needs.

After completing this unit, students should be able to:

• discuss network architecture standards for open systems;
• describe OSI reference Internet models.
• explain fundamentals and technologies of physical, data-link and network layers;
• describe the functions and architectures of LAN and WAN;
• analyse and design LAN architecture for organisational requirements;
• analyse data communication networks;
• cooperate effectively within small groups;
• present their work in various forms.

This unit introduces students to fundamentals of distributed networked environment. It provides knowledge of internetworking standards and understanding of the networking architecture, technology and operation.
