FIT1004 is a core unit introduced as part of the common core for first year undergraduates in the Faculty of Information Technology for 2006.

This unit has been updated as part of the 2009 Common Core Review. This new version will be offered for the first time in semester 1 2011 as part of the update/refresh of the faculty undergraduate degrees and the new six unit common core.

20th June 2011: Three assignments are to be included as components of the in-semester assessment. One on data collection and markup; a database design task and an SQL task. To properly weight these tasks the assessment will be changed to 50% Exam and 50% In-semester assessment. The in-semester assessment component will be marked within the standard 1.5 hours per student assignment marking allocation. Change to be implemented semester 2 2011.

16th Sept 2013: Until now, the FIT1004 unit objectives are about knowledge, understanding and developing attitudes - but make no mention of the need to be able to communicate. The proposed changes attempt to address this. I would hope this additional objective to be in place for 1st semester 2014.

This unit forms part of the common core for FIT undergraduate students. The common core is designed to ensure students have 'knowledge that is shared by all ICT professionals, regardless of their ICT discipline or domain' (ACS Core Body of Knowledge 2009, p.16) so that they can ultimately make informed professional decisions; and provide students with knowledge and understanding that transcend technologies and are robust over time so that students are well placed to deal with ongoing, rapid changes in the information technology field.

FIT1004 as an introductory data management unit, meets these objectives in this domain and provides a basis for later development in a student?s degree in the data management/database areas. It will also supply the necessary skills and attitudes, which a student may apply in their capstone final year industrial project or studio.

The key ACS Core Body of Knowledge areas included in this unit include History and Status of Discipline, Data Management, Modelling, Systems Development and Programming.

This unit will provide an introduction to the concepts of database design and usage and the related issues of data management. Students will develop skills in planning, designing, and implementing a data model using an enterprise-scale relational database system (Oracle). Methods and techniques will also be presented to populate, retrieve, update and implement integrity features on data in the implemented database system.

Manipulation of a database necessarily raises issues of data collection/creation and management, data rights (ownership, copyright, access, privacy etc) and data curation, which this unit will also address.
