FIT1003 is a core unit introduced as part of the common core for first year undergraduates in the Faculty of Information Technology (FIT) for 2006.

Reasons for Change (19 Nov 2020, 11:40am)

This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

05/01/2017 - Admin: update assessment, as per email from CE to ADE dated 21/12/2016, in line with University policy. Effective Semester 1, 2017.

06/01/2017 - Admin: align unit learning outcomes (objectives) with Handbook.

19/9/2019 - Admin: update exam duration to include additional 10 minutes reading time as per new University requirement.

4/5/2020: As the MSA course 4307 Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences is in teach-out, the MSA offering of this unit has been re-coded to FZA1003 effective Semester 2, 2020. These units will be managed by South Africa and therefore no separate Monatar entries will be made

25/09/2020 Admin: Update to include new assessment and teaching approach fields as per Handbook requirements.

19/11/2020: Admin - this unit was disestablished at FEC 5/20 on 12/11/2020 as it is no longer required.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (29 Oct 2009, 6:11pm)

This unit forms part of the common core for first year FIT undergraduate students. Its key objectives are to: provide the organisational and social context for the technical content of the other core units; introduce students to the professional roles and responsibilities of IT practitioners; and prepare students for further study in specialist units across all faculty programs, which relate to the organisational uses of IT.

At the completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. describe the basic concepts of information and information systems in relation to organisational structures;
  2. describe the business and information management processes and functions for which IT is used in organisations and in which IT professionals are involved;
  3. explain the processes of acquiring, developing and managing IT in organisations and the risks and liabilities arising from the usage and application of IT in organisations;
  4. explain the importance of information to organisational processes and functions and the role and responsibilities of IT practitioners;
  5. identify and describe the organisational and social impacts of IT and the ethical dimensions of IT related decisions;
  6. describe the roles of IT practitioners in organisations and the range of ethical and professional rights and responsibilities associated with them and the importance of the inter-relationships between the IT staff and the stakeholders in organisations.

Synopsis (29 Oct 2009, 6:11pm)

The unit will provide students with an introduction and broad overview of the application of IT to the management of information in organisations, and the role of the IT professional in developing and implementing IT-based solutions to information problems. The discussion of the organisational framework for IT and IT professional practice will be set within its broader social context. The opportunities, problems and risks associated with IT will be examined, together with their implications for the rights and responsibilities of IT professionals.
