Reasons for Introduction

Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

The Internet is becoming the preferred global electronic platform to integrate business systems and facilitate business transactions. To gain competitive advantage in an increasingly complex global marketplace, organisations are applying electronic commerce enabling technologies to their business processes to increase revenue, reduce costs, and maximize service opportunities. There is a growing demand in both the private and public sectors for professionals with a combination of internationally recognised qualifications and practical experience in both information technology and business applications.Responding to these challenges, it is proposed that study in electronic commerce should be made available to students at the Caulfield campus and the Clayton campus as well as the Berwick campus where this unit has been available since Semester 1, 1999. The Monash Faculty of Business and Economics and the Faculty of Information Technology have worked collaboratively to develop this specialist degree in Electronic Commerce with a strong focus on information technology and information systems development. The proposed amendment provides a more flexible delivery mode for all students within both faculties and complements the existing generalist Bachelor of Business and Electronic Commerce offered at Monash Gippsland and by distance education, and the Electronic Commerce major of the Bachelor or Business and Commerce at Sunway campus, Malaysia.

Recommended texts include:

No individual textbook covers all aspects of the unit in sufficient detail, hence, reading widely is a requirement. Due to rapid change in this emerging field of study, information regarding electronic commerce issues, processes and technologies quickly becomes dated. Part of the learning experience is to encourage teams of students to collaborate and begin to develop the skills to access and integrate a wide range of resource materials. These include on-line search indexes and databases that will be able to be accessed by all class members.

As a starting point, a comprehensive list of references (including recommended texts, journals, periodicals and articles) can be found at the Centre for Electronic Commerce home page at http://www-cec.buseco.monash.edu.au. Many are drawn from the Harvard Business Review, Sloan Management Review, The McKinsey Quarterly, Electronic Commerce World, MIS Quarterly and Journal of Strategic Information Systems.

Selected readings for each module, made up of relevant and contemporary articles, will be included in printed copies of the unit materials available to students.
