This is a third year elective in the Bachelor of Computing degree.
Knowledge of computerised document imaging systems and interfacing to database retrieval systems. Application of information management, scanning and recognition techniques to build database systems.
Students develop skills in building and accessing databases containing images and text. This involves extraction of pictorial and textual information, use of compression techniques, use of query languages for document and image retrieval, and conformance to standards.
Computerised document imaging systems and interfacing to database retrieval systems. Topics include document imaging principles; information management; scanning and recognition techniques; extraction of textual and pictorial information; compression techniques for storage; interface to database systems; query languages for document and image retrieval; standards and case studies of commercial systems; issues involved in computer document and image processing in LANs and WANs.
On campus.
Students attend one 2-hour lecture per week. They are expected to work on assignments and read supplied materials as well.
Lectures present materials related to the cognitive objectives. Students are required to practise skills related to these concepts in the assignments and the examination.
2-hour examination worth 60%.
Two assignments together worth 40%.
Assignments assess skills objectives.
Examination tests both cognitive and practical objectives.
12 hours per week. 2 hours are spent attending lectures. The other 10 hours are spent working on assignments and reading relevant materials.
