Reasons for Introduction

Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

Original:The Faculty has a policy that all units will be 6 points. The new 2330 BComp structure is designed for 6 point units. This unit is an upgrade of COT3031, an existing 4 point unit. The distinction is an increase in assignment requirements, and usage of two Client/Server systems. Lectures will increase from one to two hours per week to cover the additional material. Practical workshops will increase to 2 hours per week. Students will have the opportunity to experience at both 2 and 3 Tier Client/Server environments, 2 Tier Oracle JDeveloper with JDBC and 3 Tier Oracle JDeveloper and CORBA, rather than just Centura server as in COT3031.

Summary (27 Oct 2004, 1:57pm)

This subject aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding and practical experience in the use of the various components required to develop successful client-server applications. Both theoretical and practical approaches will be presented to the problems of building client-server applications. Topics include usage of the term 'client-server'; components of client-server systems, comparison of different client platforms (Linux/UNIX Motif, Windows NT, Netscape and Internet Explorer), network issues; comparison of different server platforms (file server, database server, minicomputers, mainframe, distributed servers, MPPs, remote servers).
