CSE3201 Information Retrieval Systems(DISESTABLISHED FB 05/07) (12 Dec 2007, 2:18pm) []

Reasons for Introduction

Role of Unit (22 Apr 2004, 12:34pm)

CSE3201 is an elective unit for Bachelor of Computing student and part of the database specialisation units in this degree. This unit develops further students' skill and understanding of database technologies, in particular, their knowledge on the issues of data management for non-relational databases.

Objectives

Knowledge and Understanding (Cognitive Domain Objectives) (20 Sep 2004, 2:55pm)

  • Students will understand the limitations of relational based data management to support XML and text databases.
  • Students will be able to understand the requirement to produce a well-formed and valid XML documents.
  • Students will be able to translate from user requirements to an XML Schema.
  • Students will be able to extract relevant information from XML documents.
  • Students will be able to identify different components of information retrieval systems.
  • Students will be able to give a sample approach or technique for each of the Information Retrieval system's component.
  • Students will be able to identify different approaches to distributed Information Retrieval Systems, and to understand the benefits and limitation of each of the approach.
  • Unit Content

    Summary (24 May 2004, 5:53pm)

The unit covers the information management issues related to handling non-relational data. XML and free-text documents are the example of the non-relational data. XML covers DTD, XML Schema, XSLT and XPath. Free-text retrieval covers indexing techniques, vector space model, evaluating text retrieval performance and distributed text retrieval systems.

    Recommended Reading (20 Sep 2004, 2:31pm)

Peltzer, D., XML Language and Mechanics, Addison Wesley 2003

    Teaching Methods

    Mode (20 Sep 2004, 2:34pm)

The unit will be offered once a year in Caulfield. The current offerring is semester 1.

    Strategies of Teaching (20 Sep 2004, 2:43pm)

The unit will have two teaching components:

  • Lecture. The lecture wil be conducted for 13 weeks. Each week consists of 2 hours session. The lecture will cover the theoretical component of the unit.
  • Tutorial The tutorial will be conducted for 13 weeks. Each week consists of 2 hours session. The tutorial will cover the revision of the lecture materials and practical component of the unit. The practical component of the unit will allow the students to understand the theoretical material covered in the lecture and to apply this knowledge to provide solution to a given real life problem. The students will use the skills acquired during tutorial to complete their assignments.
  • Teaching Methods Relationship to Objectives (20 Sep 2004, 2:48pm)

Cognitive Domain objective will be achieved by combination of lectures and tutorials.

    Assessment

    Strategies of Assessment (20 Sep 2004, 2:56pm)

The unit will have the following assessment components:

  • Assignment 50%
  • Written Exam 50%

  • Students will be able to translate from user requirements to an XML Schema.
  • Students will be able to extract relevant information from XML documents
  • A unit test may be conducted to further test students understanding of the assignments.

The following objectives will be assesed through formal examination:

  • Students will be able to understand the requirement to produce a well-formed and valid XML documents.
